PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Suspects fled a Plainfield bank after it was robbed Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Plainfield Police Department was called at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday to the robbery of a bank in progress at Chase Bank, 807 Southfield Drive. That’s southwest of the intersection of Quaker Boulevard and Stafford Road/East County Road 450 South in the Hendricks County town.

Deputy Chief Ryan Salisbury of the Plainfield Police Department said detectives were working on the case.

The police department posted on social media on Tuesday night that no one was hurt in the robbery, and the suspects, who were not in custody, fled prior to the arrival of first responders.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A shooting at a home in Shelbyville on Monday resulted in the death of a teenage girl and the arrest of two suspects, including a juvenile.

The Shelbyville Police Department said in a release Tuesday that officers were called to a home in a neighborhood off West Washington and South Miller streets to investigate a shooting.

Officers arrived and found 17-year-old Adalina Perez unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors tell WISH-TV there was a large gathering at the house when they heard a loud gunshot. Many thought the gunshot sounded like a firework at first. They say multiple people ran outside of the home screaming and crying.

A man who did not want to be identified told News 8, “I hope to not see nothing like that again. From what I’ve seen last night to when they brought her out of the house, I’ve never seen anything like that. I definitely hope I never see anything like that again. I’ve got grandkids that age. Definitely heartbreaking.”

Two people were taken into custody for their roles in the shooting: Jayden McQueary, 18, and an unidentified juvenile.

McQueary was booked into the Shelby County jail on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide, while the juvenile was being held at a juvenile detention center.

Investigators did not say what led to the shooting, and it’s unclear how the suspects knew the victim.

Police say the shooting is still under investigation, and ask anyone with information to contact Shelbyville PD at 317-392-5106.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The new director at the Indiana Department of Child Services says the agency is “ripe and ready for change.”

Governor Mike Braun appointed Jennifer Dorfmeyer to take over as head of the 3rd largest state agency.

I-Team 8’s Kara Kenney spoke with Dorfmeyer on-camera on her first day on the job.

• WISH: What’s your number one goal at DCS?
• Dorfmeyer: My number one goal is to ensure that we have a home for every child and that there’s a safe and loving place for all Hoosier children.
• WISH: What do you want people to know about you and DCS?
• Dorfmeyer: I want people to know I’m a human that DCS staff are human beings, we are parents, we are foster parents, adoptive parents. We care deeply about children. We want what is best for our most vulnerable Hoosiers.

Dorfmeyer worked at DCS from 2003 to 2014 as a family case manager, family case manager supervisor, and an executive role.

She returned in June 2025 as deputy commissioner, and from mid- January to mid-April 2026, she served as the interim director while director Adam Krupp took a leave of absence.

“My initial impression is that they are ripe and ready for change,” Dorfmeyer said. “We have a lot of amazing staff.”

DCS currently has more than 4,000 employees.

Adam Krupp will continue to earn his $210,000 salary as a special advisor to the Governor on child welfare issues, I-Team 8 has learned.

As DCS director, she will also earn a salary of $210,000.

“Indiana’s children are our future and our most precious resource. I am grateful for Adam Krupp’s service and the changes he has made to improve DCS. I have every confidence in Jennifer and her ability to lead this important work at such a critical agency,” Gov. Mike Braun said.

Child advocacy groups are concerned about turnover at DCS among staff and leadership.

“DCS is important because they are the front line for keeping kids safe,” Kathleen Moman, director of communications at Champions for Children said. “We’ve had a lot of director turnover. It’s an incredibly difficult job to manage.”

News 8 previosuly reported that in fiscal year 2024, the turnover rate was 37% among family case managers, up from 33% in 2023.

Moman said Champions for Children, a nonprofit advocacy group, is excited to work with Dorfmeyer.

“She’s been working with DCS for many years,” Moman said. “She’s also an adoptive parent of a child from the system herself, so we’re excited to see someone step into leadership that has experience within the system.”

Moman said DCS needs to improve on child safety.

“A lot of times we hear the priority of DCS is reunification,” Moman said. “The priority for DCS should not be reunification or adoption. It should be child safety.  I have yet to see a leadership that really takes that stance seriously.”

Jennifer Dorfmeyer said it’s one of many issues she’s evaluating.

“We are always assessing the work we are doing and how can we keep kids safer and reach permanency faster and make sure we have a home for every child,” Dorfmeyer said.

Dorfmeyer will oversee implentation of several new child welfare laws.

HEA 1036 will require DCS case workers to see a child in person within 30 days of closing a case.

Another new law says that within five days of a child’s death or near-death from abuse or neglect, DCS is required to publicly report any current or past involvement with the child.

Currently, DCS shares an annual fatality report, but critics say the release of the report is delayed a year.

For example, the agency just released the 2024 Annual Report of Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities in Indiana.

Starting July 1, DCS must share public summaries on child fatalities throughout the year, including any actions taken by DCS in response to a child’s case.

DCS will also have to overhaul its annual fatality report and include the names of judges involved with cases where a child ended up dying from abuse or neglect.

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WISH) — The Clinton County Commissioners have terminated its county jail matron following a string of felony charges and a formal resolution from the Clinton County Council.

Charges against Clinton County Sheriff Richard Kelly and Jail Matron Ashley Kelly were announced on April 9.

Richard Kelly is charged with two counts of aiding, inducing, or causing fraud; a count of aiding, inducing, or causing theft; and a count of official misconduct

Ashley Kelly is charged with two counts of fraud, a count of theft, and a count of official misconduct.

The Kellys, who are married and also already face charges out of Clinton County, were accused of the misappropriation of funds from the Indiana State Police Pension Trust. They appeared in court last week for their Marion County case.

Following the Kellys court appearance, the Clinton County Council filed a resolution that demanded the county commissioners restrict the Kellys’ access to fiscal resources and terminate them from their positions.

In a meeting on Tuesday morning, the Clinton County Commissioners responded to the council’s resolution, and then some.

Commissioners formally terminated Ashley Kelly’s employment, as well as approved a strengthened nepotism policy and “outlined additional steps aimed at protecting county employees, restoring workplace confidence, and ensuring accountability.”

The new policy, which applies to all county employees, strictly prohibits relatives from being in a direct line of supervision over another. The policy does not apply to elected officials, but does apply to appointed and contracted employees.

The policy also “explicitly applies to jail matrons.”

The commissioners also outlined their next steps:

• Submitting a formal request to the Indiana Attorney General to garnish Sheriff Kelly’s wages to “recover approximately $219,000 owed to the county from the jail commissary account.”
• Present a recommendation to the Clinton County Council and Merit Board to review and adopt a “bad actor clause” in the sheriff’s pension policy. This would prevent retirement benefits following a criminal conviction.

County commissioners said in a release that the Kelly situation has taken a toll on their government and their community.

President Jordan Brewer said now is the time to act.

““People have asked us, ‘why now?’” Brewer said. “We’ve given Sheriff Kelly multiple opportunities to do what is right in his department, and he’s chosen to ignore that. We’ve asked for the Kellys’ resignations twice and have not received them. Considering the most recent felony charges, this is a workplace safety issue. There’s no way we can have employees feel unsafe or fear retaliation.”

“It has been a rough six years,” Commissioner Bert Weaver added. “It puts us in a bad position almost every week because something doesn’t quite fit right. And quite honestly, it’s difficult to see them taking vacations while owing the county a tremendous amount of money. This has gone on long enough.”

They also addressed claims that certain sheriff’s office employees were working remotely due to restraining orders against the Kellys, noting that no such work-from-home arrangements have been approved.

The jury trial for Richard and Ashley Kelly is set for July 14.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A crash involving an off-road vehicle in Madison County claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed.

The fatal accident happened at 4:50 p.m. Monday near the 15300 block of North 100 West in Summitville, a community about 20 miles north of Anderson off of State Road 9.

An initial investigation found that a 10-year-old child was driving the ORV on private property when the passenger, 13-year-old Elijah Dickey, was ejected. Dickey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither child was wearing a helmet or protective gear at the time of the accident, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

State law requires anyone under age 18 to wear a helmet while riding on, or driving, an ATV or off-road vehicle on public or private property.

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Police say a newer technology helped to nab a suspected thief before he could burglarize a Zionsville home.

It was pitch black, and 39-year-old Fabian Eliseo Llancavil Nahuel, also known as Jose Luis Espinoza, was trying to evade police on foot, Zionsville Police Department said. Officers deployed a drone equipped with a spotlight and infrared technology to not only locate the suspect, but also guide officers on the ground to his exact location.

The drone zoomed in on the man as police closed in to make the arrest. Officers say they ultimately used a Taser to take him into custody.

Zionsville Police Capt. Marius Klykken said, “The drone was absolutely paramount in locating that suspect. He (the suspect) was located with a window punch in his pocket and some burglary type tools.”

Two homeowners who spotted Llancavil Nahuel running through their backyard had tipped off police. Authorities always encourage neighbors to stay vigilant, saying community awareness can help prevent crime. “You can’t be everywhere all the time, but you know your neighborhood. You know your neighbors. You know when someone is out of town. Communicate with each other, and if you see something out of place, please call it in,” Klykken said.

The arrest happened March 21. Police say no Zionsville homes were burglarized the day Llancavil Nahuel was arrested. Online records from Boone Circuit Court in Lebanon show he was charged with misdemeanor counts of resisting law enforcement, and false identity statement. He pleaded guilty on April 6 and was given a monthlong jail sentence.

Police say Llancavil Nahuel had warrants out of Florida and Texas for grand theft and organized criminal activity. He has since been extradited to Florida and is on a hold with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Zionsville police say cases like this one are rare in the Boone County community, but the town of 33,100 residents is not immune.

Klykken said, “I’m extremely proud of our police officers and their diligence on the road every single day. they are out there working.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There are now more than 100 new acres of land at Yellowwood State Forest for Indiana nature lovers to enjoy.

State leaders on Tuesday announced the acquisition of 122.4 acres of land in northwest Brown County that will become the newest addition to the state forest.

“This expansion…represents our ongoing commitment to stewardship and preserving Indiana’s natural heritage for future generations,” Gov. Mike Braun (R) said in a release. “Adding this land to Yellowwood State Forest ensures its permanent protection while opening new opportunities for Hoosiers to enjoy the outdoors.”

The state purchased the property for $860,000 through the DNR’s Next Level Conservation Trust. The land sits adjacent to the existing state forest boundary and fills a previous gap between sections of the forest.

The newly acquired acreage features young stands of tulip poplar, early successional species–plants and animals that colonize disturbed areas such as forest gaps and abandoned fields–and moderate to steep terrain.

DNR will begin updating boundary markings and incorporating the land into the forest’s resource management planning.

Yellowwood State Forest was established in 1940 and spans more than 24,000 acres. It is part of a broader network of public lands managed by the Indiana DNR and available to the public, which also includes Brown County State Park, Mountain Tea State Forest, Morgan-Monroe State Forest, and Monroe Lake.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Thieves broke into dozens of vehicles across Franklin Township and Greenwood this weekend, shattering windows in southeast side neighborhoods.

IMPD is now searching for the crew behind the break-ins and say the suspects may be armed.

Jacob Gill said the crew hit his father’s home in the Ashland Pointe subdivision near East Thompson Road and Five Points Road early Sunday morning.

“My father, he was creeped out a little bit because it happened literally right under that window and someone was peeking in,” Gill said. “They took something out of their pocket, put it next to the window and just blasted the window open.”

Gill believes surveillance video from the home shows a person carrying a firearm during the break-in.

“He had a gun in his waist and you can see him grab it,” Gill told News 8.

Multiple subdivisions hit  

The family believes the same crew also struck the Sapphire Ridge subdivision near Five Points Road and Edgewood Avenue on Saturday.

Neighbor Will Makker said his family witnessed recent break-ins. He and his brothers were installing security cameras after hearing about the incidents when WISH-TV spoke with them.

“It’s been about four homes they did this to around 2:30 a.m.,” Makker said. “They come for this house behind us. They broke the glass, then went to another house there. They didn’t find anything so they ran away. It was like four guys in their early twenties.”

Residents in both neighborhoods described a quiet area with ponds and newer homes, now rattled by the overnight crimes.

Police investigation  

IMPD’s Southeast District is investigating and police are asking anyone with doorbell camera or security footage from Saturday night into Sunday morning to come forward.

Investigators have not released a suspect description beyond the accounts from residents and no arrests have been announced.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Former Mt. Vernon football star George Burhenn just finished the best spring season he’s had with the Purdue Boilermakers — a sigh of relief after the adversity he’s faced the last three years. 

After winning the state championship with the Marauders in 2021, Burhenn began his Boilermaker career in 2023. His freshman season in West Lafayette was highlighted by his performance against Indiana in the season finale, logging 74 yards off five catches plus a touchdown.

Then injuries derailed his promising assent.

A broken foot cost him most of his sophomore season. Then year, Burhenn sustained a leg injury during spring practices that needed surgery five days later. After rehabbing from that, Burhenn then suffered a season-ending broken arm in the game against Notre Dame in September.

The injuries kept piling up, but Burhenn’s determination never wavered.

“It’s definitely tough because every time I go through an injury, it’s like, ‘Alright, I got to get to being healthy again.’ Then it’s smooth sailing. And then it happens again,” Burhenn said. “Just really take it day by day. There’s definitely some dark days, but it’s just a part of the journey with that.”

Burhenn’s love for football is what keeps bringing him back.

“I was the one that asked to play football, and it just kind of happens,” Burhenn said. “It’s just the hand that I was dealt, and I have to put my best foot forward.”

The journey hasn’t been easy for Burhenn or his family. In 2023, his father Brian was diagnosed with ALS. Brian’s constant optimism the last three years has motivated George through his own battles.

“He inspires me so much every day,” Burhenn said. “Just his positive mindset every day just blows me away, and everybody else that knows him blows them away, too. Just every day wakes up with a good attitude.”

Brian’s struggles has helped put George’s football injuries into perspective, as well.

“He told me one time, ‘You know, I’d rather break my ankle every day than to have ALS.’ That was a big eye opener for me,” Burhenn said. “It’s like, my situation’s not that bad. I’m playing at Purdue in front of my family every weekend. My situation’s nothing compared to his.”

Burhenn and that constant positive attitude will be back out on the field here at Ross-Ade Stadium come September as the Boilers top tight end. His head coach Barry Odom knows he’ll be a major asset once fully healthy.

“Everyone within our building knows what George has been through and knows what he’s overcome, what a great teammate he is and competitor he is,” Odom said. “He’s a mismatch nightmare for some people and that’s great to have on our sideline.”

Burhenn’s been an inspiration to his Purdue teammates.

“Seeing the way he works, it’s really motivational just to see your teammate doing that just to be on the field with you guys,” Boilers sophomore quarterback Ryan Browne said.

Burhenn’s message for those going through difficult times is simple.

“There’s always light at the end of the tunnel,” Burhenn said. “Definitely dark days, but God’s there for you and there will always be a better day than the previous one.”

Burhenn’s hoping for many brighter days ahead.

The closing, starting May 11 at the store at 5550 E. Fall Creek Parkway North Drive, will allow what Walmart called for “a rapid remodel” in a news release issued Tuesday.

The pharmacy will remain open while the rest of the store is closed.

Planned improvements include paint, fixtures, signs, LED lighting and expanded aisles in the store. Also, upgrades will also be made to online grocery pickup and delivery services.

The store plans to post updates on the remodeling on its Facebook page.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A neighborhood organization and a half-dozen property owners filed a lawsuit Friday in Marion County to reverse a government decision to allow a $4 billion data center project on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

The Metropolitan Development Commission on March 18 approved the proposal for Decatur Township despite strong opposition from residents.

Seattle-based Sabey Data Centers plans to build a center with more than 1 million square feet on a campus across multiple properties along Kentucky Avenue and Camby Road. Sabey’s website says site preparation is expected to start this year, with the first building completed by 2028 and the second building by 2030.

The lawsuit filed in Marion Superior Court 5 alleges that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission and the City-County Council approved variances and commitment modifications for the proposed Sabey Data Center Technology Park that violate the petitioners’ due process rights and Indiana law.

The lawsuit also argues that the proposed data center conflicts with the area’s city-approved planned use for a mix of retail, offices and residential uses.

The lawsuit also reiterates concerns about health and safety presented during hearings on the project.

The Decatur Township Civic Council; Timothy W. McWhirter and Janice F. McWhirter as trustees of The McWhirter and McWhirter Revocable Living Trust; Charles E. Young II; Leslie Young; Loueva Gay Young as trustee of the Young Revocable Trust; Patricia C. Andrews; and Russell H. Glashan filed the lawsuit. Attorney Arie Lipinski, who specializes in environmental and property rights, is representing them.

The lawsuit was filed against the Metropolitan Development Commission; the City-County Council; Sabey Data Center Properties LLC; SCP Decatur Technology Park LLC; and Strategic Capital Partners LLC.

Online court records show summons went out Monday to the defendants, giving them about two weeks to respond to the lawsuit. No hearings had been set as of Tuesday night.

GARY, Ind. (WISH) — Multi-platinum selling, Grammy, and Golden Globe nominated recording artist Wiz Khalifa will perform at Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana on August 28.

Wiz Khalifa’s career took off in 2011 when he released his first major debut album Rolling Papers, which spawned the hugely successful hits “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” and “No Sleep.” Those hits gave Wiz the platform to win the award for Best New Artist at the 2011 BET Awards and Top New Artist at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.

“Black and Yellow” also earned him his first two GRAMMY nods for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song

As a follow up to Rolling Papers, Wiz Released O.N.I.F.C. in 2012. This album featured tracks “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You” featuring The Weeknd. His third studio album released in 2014, Blacc Hollywood, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart and included the hit single “We DemBoyz.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana is adding nearly 52,000 trout into 37 bodies of water in 22 Indiana counties this spring, the Department of Natural Resources said in a news release issued Tuesday.

An online document from the state lists all of the locations to be stocked with trout in 2026.

Anglers can fish for trout in lakes year-round, and all lake stockings were completed in February and March.

A total of 20,850 rainbow trout were being stocked in inland streams ahead of trout season. Saturday marks the official opening day for trout season in inland streams in the state.

All stocked trout originate from the Curtis Creek Trout Rearing Station near Howe in LaGrange County and average roughly 11 inches in length.

Trout will bite on artificial baits, such as spinners and flies, the release said. Natural baits, including worms and bee moths, tend to yield more success.

The daily bag limit for trout in inland waters is five fish per day, with a minimum size of 7 inches. Inland waters include all bodies of water other than Lake Michigan and its tributaries.

Only one brown trout can be part of an angler’s daily catch. Any harvested brown trout caught below the Brookville tailwater, or in the Oliver, Olin, or Martin lakes, must be 18 inches or larger to be kept.

Anglers 18 and older are required to have an Indiana fishing license and a trout/salmon stamp. Both can be purchased online.

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A Hamilton County whiskey distillery and restaurant is selling its hospitality and real estate assets to an indoor golf and social entertainment club, said a news release issued Tuesday morning.

Westfield-based West Fork Whiskey Co. announced the deal with Fishers-based Stick & Hack.

Stick & Hack said in its own news release that it will move into the West Fork Whiskey location near Grand Park Sports Campus. The sale was expected to close within 45 to 60 days.

Stick & Hack already has sites in Fishers and Broad Ripple with golf simulators. The virtual golf startup began in 2019.

The release said the Westfield Stick & Hack site will have two restaurants; three full-service bars with a craft cocktail, beer, and wine program; and an entertainment lineup featuring putt-putt, golf simulators, racing simulators, darts, ping pong, shuffleboard, and bocce. “Plans for an outdoor beer garden and expanded outdoor activities on the property are already in development, with the vision of creating a true indoor-outdoor destination that serves the community year-round,” the release said.

West Fork Whiskey says its products, including the Old Hamer and Hugh Hamer lines, will continue to be available at wholesale and retail sites and at bars and restaurants across Indiana. The Westfield location will remain open during the transition so customers can get a final change to experience the venue. The company will also continue operating West Fork Social House in Indianapolis’ Fountain Square neighborhood.
