INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives on Friday afternoon asked for help in locating 14-year-old Kathya Rodriguez, last seen on Monday afternoon.

On Friday night, an Indiana Silver Alert was issued for the girl.

Described as 4 feet, 9 inches, and 99 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, Kathya was last seen on Monday in the area of 2100 Waterford Place. That’s at The Meridian apartments off Westlane Road/West 71st Street on the city’s northwest side.

She was last seen about 12:45 p.m. Monday. She was wearing a gray hoodie with white writing, blue jeans, and sandals with socks.

In a statement Friday, IMPD said early in the investigation, detectives had no information indicating she was in danger, but as the investigation continued, detectives found details that led them to believe Kathya might be at risk.

Detectives believe she may be with Victor Martinez, 15. IMPD described him as 5 feet, 5 inches, and 165 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen Monday near 7200 Knobwood Drive. That’s also at The Meridian apartments.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts was asked to call 911, contact the IMPD missing persons unit at 317-327-6160, or call Crimestoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

This story was updated from its initial post after IMPD corrected the last name of Kathya.

But the U.S. government has no way to create an automatic, preauthorized “dead man’s switch” that would prompt immediate retaliation.

Instead, if Trump were killed, the transfer of power to his successor is governed by the 25th Amendment and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. Vice President JD Vance instantaneously would become commander in chief and have authority for any retaliation.

Under such a scenario, Vance could do exactly what Trump called for, though there also is a chance he could decide not to follow his predecessor’s orders — or offer a direct response in a different way.

“The U.S. has, for a whole variety of reasons, never utilized a technical ‘dead man’s switch,’” said Garrett M. Graff, author of “Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself — While the Rest of Us Die.”

The United States does have extensive contingency plans for continuity of government in the event of a nuclear attack or other major catastrophe that wipes out most or all of Washington. But those plans also do not allow for immediately launching retaliatory strikes upon the death of a president, even if that president had demanded that the military be ready to do so.

Trump nonetheless posted on his social media website Saturday that Iran had made threats “to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate” him and he said 1,000 “missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat.”

Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said hours later that Iranians would continue to avenge the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The elder Khamenei died in the initial U.S. and Israeli strikes that started the war in late February, and he was mourned in funeral events throughout Iran this week. His son said retaliation “is the will of our nation and must certainly be carried out.”

“We pledge to take revenge for the pure blood of you and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraceful killers,” he said on remarks aired on state television. “This revenge is the will of our nation and must certainly be carried out.”

The White House on Saturday did not immediately answer questions about what would become of Trump’s military orders should he be killed.

During those recent funeral events, mourners repeatedly held posters or banners calling for Trump to be killed along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Israel alerted U.S. officials to fresh Iranian plots to kill Trump. The White House has refused to comment, but Trump appeared to reference to such threats in comments during this week’s NATO summit in Turkey, saying, “They want to take out the U.S. leader — me.”

Sabrina Singh, former Biden administration deputy Pentagon press secretary, said “Iran wanting to target senior American leaders is something that we know is happening.”

“You have to take these as credible threats,” Singh said.

US retaliations would almost certainly come, just not automatically

Trump was targeted in two domestic assassination attempts during the 2024 presidential campaign and saw a gunman storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner he was attending in April.

The president flew part of the way back to Washington from Turkey this week aboard an older Air Force One jet rather a new Qatari-gifted aircraft, raising fresh security questions about the newer plane. Images of the jet, which was retrofitted at an estimated cost of $400 million, show it is not equipped with some of the same missile detection and countermeasure systems as earlier versions.

The swap occurred as the U.S. and Iran once again began trading strikes, jeopardizing last month’s initial deal to end the war. Asked about Iranian threats, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, “I’m No. 1 on their list.”

Graff said the U.S. prepared years of plans for how nuclear launch authority would devolve in the event of a surprise attack. That included, during 30 years of the Cold War, the country keeping fleets of airborne command posts flying 24 hours a day with a general aboard one of them who could take over nuclear launch orders in the event Washington was lost.

“What I believe Trump is saying is that he’s left standing orders to attack if he’s killed, e.g., that the Pentagon should proceed with standard launch protocols,” Graff said. “There’s a lot of reason to doubt the legality of such standing orders, since in the event of a president’s death, the nuclear launch authority would immediately pass to the vice president or designated successor — and ultimately it would be up to him or her to determine whether to proceed.”

Trump’s post only refers to firing missiles at Iran, which the U.S. has done scores of time since its war with Iran began. He did not expressly threaten involving nuclear weapons.

Graff said that, in addition to leaving standing orders in case of his death, Trump also might say “something to Vance like, ‘If I’m killed, nuke Iran,'” and that would make ”more sense and would be absolutely legal”

Biden administration once warned Iran about Trump, too

Washington receiving credible threats against the president and top U.S. leaders from Iran and other foreign adversaries is not uncommon and is often disclosed via national security briefings or other classified means. But far less common is Trump declaring publicly that he personally has been targeted by Iran.

Still, this is not the first time Washington has threatened Iran over threats against Trump.

In 2022, the Biden administration warned Iran against attacking U.S. citizens after the Justice Department’s disclosure that a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had planned to assassinate John Bolton, Trump’s first-term national security adviser. Now a Trump critic, Bolton last month pleaded guilty to illegally retaining classified documents in a case led by Trump’s Justice Department.

President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in 2022 that “should Iran attack any of our citizens, to include those who continue to serve the United States or those who formerly served, Iran will face severe consequences.”

Two years later, in the heat of Trump’s campaign against Democrat Kamala Harris, Biden’s vice president, the Biden administration again quietly warned Iran. This time, officials made clear that an attack on Trump would be considered an act of war.

(INDIANA CAPTIAL CHRONICLE) — Indiana K-12 schools must meet new standards before seeking approval to implement a four-day school week.

The model, once favored by rural schools due to a shortage of bus drivers, is spreading nationwide to urban and suburban districts seeking to recruit teachers and students by extending the school day, so students and staff can take Fridays off. 

Schools can apply for a flexibility waiver through the Indiana Department of Education to move to a four-day school week. 

Now, schools must earn an “A” grade through the state’s A-F accountability model to be considered for a four-day school week waiver.

That’s one of four minimum requirements outlined in House Enrolled Act 1266, which took effect July 1.

The Indiana Department of Education recently issued guidance to schools about the new criteria ahead of the coming school year.

Schools must also offer transportation for students who choose to attend a school operating on a five-day schedule, meet the state’s $45,000-a-year minimum teacher salary threshold, and offer enrichment and remediation at no cost to parents the day school is not in session.

The State Board of Education must then grant approval before a school can transition to a four-day week.

Vinton Elementary pilots four-day week

Vinton Elementary School is entering its third and final year piloting a four-day school week.

The Lafayette-area school, with an enrollment of 408, is the sole school in Indiana operating on a four-day schedule through the state Department of Education’s flexibility waiver for innovation.

School starts at 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday, with dismissal delayed until 3:45 p.m. — a necessity to meet the required 54,000 minutes of instruction each year, which the school accomplishes in a mere 151 days compared to the typical 180 days.

Students attend class on Fridays only when a holiday falls on a Monday, so they don’t miss two days in one week.

The National Conference of State Legislatures estimates 850 school districts operate on a four-day schedule, saving their budgets an average of 0.4% to 2.5% a year.

Principal Cindy Preston is impressed by the results she’s seen thus far: Student disicplinary referrals are down from 495 before the pilot started to 293 referrals last school year.

Staff absences declined from 656 to 398 a year.

Eighty-nine percent of third graders passed their spring assessments last year, up from 73% when the school still operated five days a week.

And a clear majority of parents and staff report they are satisfied with the four-day schedule, Preston said.

Yet she looks at the new criteria and wonders whether Vinton will qualify for another waiver once the pilot expires.

The school already meets two of the four minimum standards for teacher salaries and transportation.

Students are provided free busing to other elementary schools within the Lafayette School Corporation if parents wish to keep them on a five-day schedule.

The YMCA offers on-site daycare at Vinton on Fridays, but few students participate.

Preston said she is exploring options to provide free onsite enrichment and remedial programming on Fridays to qualify for another waiver, but an “A” rating will be more difficult to achieve.

“We’re a high-poverty school,” she said. “We’re about 80-85% poverty, so hitting that mark is very hard. This will be my 15th year as principal here, and we’ve never reached that.”

A spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Education said waiver applications will formally open to other districts following the release of A-F grades later this school year.

The department prioritizes applications “that clearly center on student needs and include thoughtful engagement with families and school staff about the potential impacts,” said Courtney Bearsch, chief communications officer for the department.

Moving forward

Preston said she’s hopeful lawmakers will either grandfather Vinton in or revise the standards so the school can continue its four-day routine, even if it doesn’t receive an “A” rating this year.

The school applied for its initial flexibility waiver to make the district more attractive to families in neighboring districts.

While enrollment declined the first year, Preston said it rebounded the following year. Twenty-six percent of those new students transferred from a neighboring district, she said.

Initial staff concerns subsided as the year progressed, and the school no longer witnessed an influx of parents removing their child from school early for weekend trips, Preston said.

Teachers had time for deeper, uninterrupted instruction. The 90-minute reading block became 120 minutes, she said.

“Even though we’re squeezing five days (into four), teachers feel like they really do have a lot more wiggle room to do more hands-on, deeper dives into instruction instead of just hitting the surface.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says a man was shot and killed near two hotels in downtown Indianapolis after police responded to a shooting in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 300 block of Senate Avenue, near W New York Street.

According to police, officers arrived and found a man in critical condition with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of nearby hotels.

Police say 20 minutes later, the man died.

At this time, police have not confirmed a suspect or motive for the shooting.

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Zionsville Police Department is investigating a fire on Historic Main Street that caused more than $150,000 in damage and is believed to have been deliberately set.

The Zionsville Fire Department said crews responded at 1:41 a.m. Friday to the blaze at 195 S. Main St., the former Kogan Antiques and Lighting.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

At a press conference later Friday morning, Zionsville Mayor John Stehr said the fire is believed to be arson.

Stehr said surveillance footage and the burn pattern points to an Israeli flag that had been hanging outside the building for approximately three years.

“It looks to be that that was sort of the impetus to this — that somebody may have lit the Israeli flag on fire, and that led to a burn pattern that we see here on the side of the building,” Stehr said.

The mayor did not hold back in expressing his reaction to the incident.

“It breaks my heart. This isn’t the people that I know in Zionsville. This doesn’t define Zionsville,” Stehr said. “I’ve used the word appalling, abhorrent. I can’t think of enough adjectives to tell you just how I feel about this. It’s obviously wrong.”

Community members in Zionsville say hate is not welcome in their town.

“There’s no place for hate, diversity is beautiful,” said Bob Goodman, who co-owns Robert Goodman Jewelers, right down the street from the location of the arson attack, with his wife, Rose-Marie.

Their store is lined with messages of tolerance including “Hate has no home here” and “Diversity is beautiful.”

“I think we’re all shocked and sad at the same time,” Rose-Marie Goodman said. “Hate is not something we can accept anywhere.”

Bob said whithat le the arsonist might have been trying to send a political message about the current government in Israel, it comes off as a much wider attack on Jewish people in general. “It’s a statement against a religion, the Jewish religion, when they do that, in my opinion.

“You can protest the government. … We do not support the government and their actions in the Middle East, hard stop. … But this is a statement against a religion.”

State Rep. Becky Cash, a Republican whose district includes Zionsville, said she was “horrified” when she heard about the attack. “It’s been years since I’ve heard of an antisemitic attack in Zionsville. Arson and crimes are not free speech, and my hope would be that nobody would ever say anything hateful toward anybody at all… I am confident our law enforcement will do everything they can to find out whoever did this and prosecute them.”

Law enforcement have not yet announced any suspects in the case.

The FBI said it offered to assist with the investigation, but the Zionsville Police Department is the lead agency. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Nick Ruby at 317-941-9072.

The Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and partners in the Greater Indianapolis Jewish Community issued a statement condemning the act.

“This morning the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and partners in the Greater Indianapolis Jewish Community were made aware by Town of Zionsville leadership that a structure fire occurred overnight at a Zionsville Village building that was known to publicly display an Israeli flag alongside an American flag.”

Town officials have confirmed that the fire was caused by arson, and the FBI has joined the investigation. While the motive remains under investigation, in our current environment, we are deeply concerned that the displayed flags may have been targeted. We condemn this despicable act of apparent intimidation in the strongest possible terms, and we call on civic, faith, and community leaders across Central Indiana to do the same. Arson, violence, and intimidation can never be accepted and have no place in our community.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix rose 12.8% as they made their debut on Wall Street, at a time when demand for chips is surging thanks to the frenzy around artificial intelligence.

The company is already one of the largest in South Korea, along with Samsung Electronics, and is a member of the Kospi index. Even with a recent pullback, the country’s Kospi index is up 77% so far this year and SK Hynix shares have more than tripled.

SK Hynix priced its American depositary receipts, or ADRs, at $149 each Thursday. They opened Friday at $170 and closed at $168.01. The offering of 177.9 million ADRs raised proceeds of $26.5 billion, making it the biggest-ever initial share sale in the U.S. by a foreign company. An ADR is issued by a bank or broker and is a simplified way for U.S. investors to own foreign stocks through the U.S. markets.

SK Hynix is going public in the U.S. amid a surge in IPO proceeds. There were 48 IPOs raising a total of $104.8 billion during the second quarter, according to Renaissance Capital. It is the biggest quarter for deal proceeds in five years, in large part because of SpaceX raising $75 billion. Many of the companies going public are capitalizing on the demand for all things AI.

SK Hynix has a dominant position globally for high bandwidth memory, which is essential for the development of advanced AI technology. The company recently entered a partnership with Wall Street’s most valuable company, Nvidia, for advanced memory chips as AI infrastructure expands globally.

Increasing demand for AI has been driving a surge in profits for chipmakers. Memory chips have become more expensive as demand outpaces supply along with the advancement of artificial intelligence technology. Technology giant Apple recently announced an increase in prices for Macs and iPads because of the jump in price for memory chips.

The U.S. is SK Hynix’s largest market, accounting for 68.8% of its revenue last year. It is planning an expansion that includes building its first U.S. production facility, located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Overall, the company had revenue of just under $65 billion in 2025. That helped profits double to about $28 billion.

The company recently joined with Samsung and the government in announcing plans to invest a combined 800 trillion won ($518 billion) in building a new computer chipmaking hub in South Korea’s southwest region, part of national efforts to expand investment beyond the greater Seoul metropolitan area, the country’s economic center and heart of its semiconductor sector.

The promise of growing profits has catapulted stock prices within the tech sector, particularly for chipmakers. Micron Technology’s stock value more than tripled in 2025 and is on pace to more than triple again in 2026. Nvidia’s stock had similar growth several years ago and notched more relatively modest gains in 2025.

Big chipmakers have become the most valuable and influential companies on Wall Street. Their high stock values give them outsized influence over Wall Street and major indexes have been setting records mostly because of the tech sector.

Shares in SK Hynix traded in Seoul slipped 0.3% on Friday.

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – The Hamilton County Health Department is warning people to protect themselves from mosquitoes, after one tested positive for the West Nile virus in Carmel.

In a press release and post on Facebook, officials said they found the sample in Founder’s Park. 

“This detection means West Nile virus is present in Hamilton County. Help protect yourself by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when possible, and eliminating standing water around your home,” the post said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of the virus include fever, head and body aches, rash and vomiting. A severe illness can lead to hospitalization or even death.

Advice from the Hamilton County Health Department:

• Wear long sleeves, pants, socks, and shoes when outdoors.
• Apply EPA approved insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus to any exposed skin.
• Keep mosquitoes outside by keeping doors and windows closed or making sure screens are in good repair.
• Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, when the mosquitoes that transmit WNV are most active.

People living in Hamilton County are asked to do the following to eliminate mosquito breeding:

• Remove all unneeded containers that hold water (tires, cans, bottles, buckets, jars, drums, and other trash / rubbish).
• Dump and invert wheelbarrows and kiddie / toddler pools when not in use.
• Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls weekly.
• Inspect water in flowerpots and plant containers weekly.
• Clean rain gutters.
• Drain and fill tire ruts, stagnant pools, and puddles.
• Place tight covers over cisterns, cesspools, septic tanks, tubs, and rain barrels where water is stored.
• Keep the margins of ponds clear of vegetation and stock ornamental ponds with top – feeding minnows.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WISH) — An Indiana trooper was recovering at a hospital after being shot multiple times after a cross-state police chase Friday morning near the I-94 exit for Michigan City.

Indiana State Police said Sgt. James Heflin underwent a successful surgery at Memorial Hospital in South Bend and remained stable.

After a manhunt, the subject of the chase, Kevin W. Meyers, 54, of LaPorte, was found dead with gunshot wounds in a cornfield about 4 miles southwest of LaPorte.

Officials say the encounter began as a traffic stop in Berrien County, Michigan, and resulted in a police chase involving a reportedly stolen vehicle.

Berrien County Police told ABC affiliate ABC57 that the truck was stolen from the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Michigan.

Police tried to pull over Meyers, who was driving a 2019 Ford F-150, wouldn’t stop despite the chase from Michigan into Indiana.

The shooting of the trooper happened near the Speedway gas station off the I-94 exit for Michigan City.

“LaPorte County – At approximately 5:30 a.m. today, Indiana State Troopers responded to I‑94 to assist Berrien County, Michigan authorities in a stolen‑vehicle pursuit that had crossed into Indiana. During the pursuit, the suspect fired multiple rounds from a rifle and pointed the weapon at pursuing officers. The chase continued off I‑94 onto local roads, where the suspect temporarily eluded capture.

“An Indiana State Trooper later located the suspect vehicle, a silver 2019 Ford F‑150, near I‑94 and U.S. 421. While behind the vehicle, a collision occurred between the suspect’s truck and the trooper’s patrol car. The suspect then opened fire from inside the truck, striking both the patrol vehicle and the trooper multiple times before fleeing the scene.

“Responding troopers arrived quickly, loaded the injured trooper into a police vehicle, and transported him to Franciscan Health Michigan City for emergency care. A large‑scale manhunt was then initiated.

“At approximately 9:16 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit located the Ford F‑150 concealed in a tree line in the 7500 block of Joliet Road in rural LaPorte County. As additional officers moved in, gunfire was heard coming from a nearby cornfield. No officers were injured. A perimeter was established, and tactical teams were deployed to search the area. The suspect was later found deceased in the cornfield with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

“The suspect has been identified as Kevin W. Meyers, 54, of LaPorte, Indiana. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, at 7:00 a.m.  The injured trooper has been identified as Sgt. Justin Heflin, a 12‑year veteran of the Indiana State Police and also served in the United States Marine Corps. Sgt. Heflin sustained multiple gunshot wounds. After receiving initial treatment at Franciscan Health, he was transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he underwent successful surgery. He is currently in stable condition and is surrounded by his family.

“This investigation was assisted by many local agencies, and the Indiana State Police expresses its sincere appreciation for their support. The Indiana State Police also thank the Speedway Corporation and The Harley Davidson Shop of Michigan City for their cooperation and understanding during this investigation.

“The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department will be releasing a photo of the deceased suspect via email following the issuance of this news release.”

INDIANPOLIS (WISH) — Daniel Jones says he’s feeling good two weeks ahead of the start of training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts quarterback was back on the field at Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis Friday to host his youth football camp. In between the fun with the kids, Jones shared a health update as he continues to recover from December’s Achilles tear.

Jones said he’s hit all the milestones he’s wanted to reach in his recovery process and expects to be a full participant once the Colts begin training camp at Grand Park at the end of July.

“I think I’ve made a good bit of progress since minicamp and will continue to do that these next two weeks before camp and on through camp, but I’m feeling really good, and I’m in a good spot,” Jones said.

Jones said the recovery process has been “monotonous at times,” but he’s building the strength and confidence in his leg.

“You’re doing a lot of the same things over and over again. I think it’s just about staying focused with that and sticking to the routine of it, trusting that as you accumulate more and more work and time, certain things will get stronger and better and you’ll make progress,” Jones said.

Jones also still fully expects to be the starter for the Colts season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 13.

In the meantime, Jones enjoyed running around and throwing the ball with hundreds of young football players during his camp. He’s felt the love from the Indianapolis community as he enters his second year with the Colts.

“I feel really grateful to the city for supporting us and supporting me, so it’s fun to have been through it for a year and now meet a lot of them and get around a little bit more.”

Jones and the rest of the Colts team report to Grand Park for training camp on July 28 with practices beginning the next day.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis City-County Council President plans to propose a data center moratorium on Monday. 

President Maggie Lewis, a Democrat, said she plans to introduce an amendment to proposed data center zoning regulations during the Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee meeting on July 13, enacting a moratorium. 

“This pause will provide the City-County Council, the administration, industry experts, and community stakeholders the opportunity to fully evaluate the long-term impacts of these developments, including infrastructure demands, utility capacity, environmental considerations, economic outcomes, and neighborhood quality of life,” Lewis said in a statement. “This is not about slowing progress. It is about exercising responsible leadership and ensuring that decisions of this magnitude are made through a thoughtful, transparent, and data-driven process.”

Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC) President John Dillon dismissed the idea of a moratorium when the MDC advanced the data center zoning ordinance, even in the face of dozens of protesters. 

The zoning regulations, if approved, would set minimum standards for data center developments in Indianapolis. Critics have said the regulations, as written, are too broad and will only streamline development. 

Groups like Citizens Action Coalition have called for a moratorium to allow time to draft more robust restrictions. Lewis echoed similar motivations when announcing her intent to propose the pause on developments. 

“Our responsibility is to make informed decisions that serve the best interests of Indianapolis residents,” Lewis said. “Given the significant questions that remain, a deliberate review is both prudent and necessary before moving forward.”

The City-County Council unanimously approved a special resolution on May 4, requesting the MDC temporarily stop approving new data centers. But the resolution isn’t enforceable. Councilman Michael-Paul Hart, a Republican, previously told News 8 the vote was more symbolic to him rather than a real measure to slow development. 

A public hearing on the data center zoning regulations is planned at 5:30pm on Monday, July 13, inside the City-County Building at 200 E Washington St in Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Momentum Indy cycling festival returns to downtown Indianapolis starting Friday evening. The races will look a little different, with a new route that takes over the Bottleworks District.

This year introduces a new event on Friday — Street Sprints. It will pit cyclists against each other in a head-to-head tournament down the brick road on Carrollton Avenue.

Now entering its 16th year, Executive Director Jennifer Cvar says Momentum Indy continues to evolve and grow.

“[The sprints are] very explosive power where they go down deadhead drag race down Carrollton Avenue,” Cvar said. “People can follow along in the tournament to see who advances. At the end, our amateur women and men will face off against the pros.”

On Saturday, the main races will take riders on a slightly longer 0.78-mile course down Mass Ave and around the Bottleworks District.

“This is a great place to have a bike race,” Cvar said. “You have all of these amenities at Bottleworks. Everyone who comes to the event gets a front row seat.”

Sunday marks the return of the Parkside Throwdown at the Indy Cycloplex, which was added to last year’s lineup.

Marian University senior Fred Meridith says it was great to bring world-class cyclists to his home track.

“To have it in the summer — as a pro race was a super cool experience,” Meridith said. “Getting to drive around where I race and spend every day is super cool.”  

During the races in the Bottleworks District, the festival will also have activities, music and vendors set up on Mass. Ave between Carrollton Ave. and Bellefontaine Ave. There is no admission fee for spectators.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) —  The Indy Dance Festival begins this Sunday, July 12, with a community dance jam. The celebration of dance and movement across the city continues the following weekend on July 18 and 19 with additional events and performances.

The Indy Dance Council helps organize the festival and says the goal is to provide an entry point for everyone to engage with dance, regardless of background. Activities include interactive community events, free classes, masterclasses and professional performances across various locations in the city.

The community dance jam this Sunday, July 12, will be held at Morris Bicentennial Plaza. Greenlee said it will feature a site-specific performance, followed by an open invitation for the audience to join in dancing.

The jam also includes a prelim battle for dancers to participate in the following weekend’s “seven to Smoke” performance, before opening to a full open dance floor for all attendees.

Five free community classes are offered as part of the festival. These include a yoga class for movers and dancers, a musical theater class for people ages 60 and older and a kids’ hip hop class in partnership with Choreoblitz Kids at the Frederick Douglass Community Center.

Additionally, an all-abilities dance class will be held with ArtMix at the Harrison Center. Salsa and Latin drumming classes are scheduled in partnership with Arts with a Purpose at Roberts Park Church. All of these community classes are free and open to the public.

Beyond community classes, the festival features 12 masterclasses covering various styles, including ballet, breaking and contemporary. A free lecture will also be available for dancers interested in dance-adjacent career paths.

The main performances will take place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, at the Tobias Theater at Newfields. Participating groups include Dance Kaleidoscope, Indy Ballet, Relevations and the 317 Crew.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the intersection of Maryland and Pennsylvania Streets in downtown Indianapolis after a woman was struck by a vehicle, police say.

According to police, the crash happened early Saturday morning. The woman was riding a scooter when she was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of East Maryland and South Pennsylvania Streets.

Police are searching for the driver and have not released any information about the vehicle or suspect.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hear Indiana, a longtime advocate and resource for children with hearing loss, is expanding its services to include adults, the organization announced on Daybreak Saturday.

Ellyn McCall, CEO of Hear Indiana, joined Patty Spitler to discuss the importance of early detection and treatment for hearing loss.

McCall highlighted the value of baseline hearing tests for younger people to monitor changes over time.

“If listening in noise is getting hard, if it’s getting difficult to hear in restaurants or in groups, or if you’re missing parts of conversations, that’s a great sign to get some testing done”.

Hear Indiana, founded to create equal opportunities for people with hearing loss through listening and spoken language, offers a variety of services. These include audiology, speech and language therapy, school support, advocacy, and a summer camp for children. The expansion to adult services is expected to help fund the organization’s pediatric programs.

“We don’t turn anyone away for lack of ability to pay,” McCall said, highlighting the clinic’s sliding fee scale and commitment to removing financial barriers. While more insurance companies are providing coverage for hearing aids and cochlear implants, reimbursement rates often do not cover the full cost of care.

McCall also shared her family’s experience, noting that her son, who is deaf and uses cochlear implants.

“What we are offering at Hear Indiana is life-changing, and I’ve seen that from a personal perspective”.
