INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Dense fog to start the day, with humid conditions returning this afternoon. A late-night storm chance develops, followed by a significant pattern change this weekend.

This Morning

We’re tracking dense fog across central Indiana, particularly impacting low-lying areas in Marion, Johnson, Hendricks, and Hamilton counties. Visibility is down to a quarter-mile or less in some spots, so allow extra time for the morning commute. Look for the fog to lift between 9 and 10 a.m. as a light southwesterly breeze develops. Temperatures at daybreak are in the upper 60s to near 70°.

Today

After the fog clears, we will see a return to more humid conditions this afternoon. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with highs reaching the mid 80s. Dew points climb into the upper 60s, giving it that sticky, summery feel.

Tonight

Our next weather system—a quick hitting front will bring increased moisture into the state late tonight. Look for isolated showers and thunderstorms to develop after midnight. A few downpours are possible, but for most, rainfall amounts will remain light.

Weekend Outlook

Saturday

The shower and storm threat continues into Saturday morning, then shifts eastward by afternoon. Highs reach the low 80s, before a significant pattern change takes hold. A strong Canadian high-pressure system begins to push southward Saturday evening, ushering out the humidity and bringing in much drier air.

Saturday Night into Sunday

The front clears the area by late Saturday night. Look for skies to clear and humidity levels to drop noticeably. Overnight lows fall into the upper 50s to low 60s. Sunday will feature abundant sunshine with highs only in the mid to upper 70s. It will feel more like mid-September than late August.

7-Day Forecast

Slightly below average temperatures for much of the week. Our next best chance for rain arrives on Wednesday, but rainfall amounts look to be low – which is great news!

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County prosecutors have filed attempted murder charges against the 37-year-old suspect in a police shooting that injured two IMPD officers.

Kreshaun Brinkley, who was also injured in the shooting, has been released from the hospital and is currently being held at the Marion County jail.

The incident unfolded in the 300 block of North Fleming Street on Indy’s west side around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 14.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT officers served a narcotics warrant at a home when the suspect, Brinkley, fired at officers exiting their armored vehicle.

Two officers were hit in the initial gunfire; returning fire from IMPD struck Brinkley at least once

The shootout lasted for at least an hour, prompting IMPD to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area.

Brinkley finally surrendered around 3:15 p.m. and was taken into custody. By the end of the shootout, over 200 rounds had been fired from inside and outside the residence.

A court case opened in Marion Superior Court 31 on Thursday shows Brinkley facing charges of three counts of attempted murder, five counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, three counts of criminal recklessness, and one count of criminal vandalism.

Brinkley is due in court Friday morning for a hearing.

This is a developing story. News 8 has reached out to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for more charging information.

The Dallas Wings snapped the Indiana Fever's five-game winning streak with a 91-85 victory on Thursday. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell still managed to make WNBA history in the loss.

DALLAS (WISH) — The Indiana Fever’s winning streak is over.

The Fever entered Thursday night on a five-game winning streak, but the Dallas Wings had something to say about that as Dallas beat Indiana 91-85.

Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with a game-high 37 points. With her performance, Mitchell set a WNBA record for most consecutive games with 20+ points. She has now scored 20+ points in 21 consecutive games, breaking a tie with A’ja Wilson.

Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton congratulated Mitchell on a post on X.

That wasn’t the only history that Mitchell made on Thursday. Her 37-point performance helped her pass herself for the most points in a single season in Fever history. Her previous record was 890 points during the 2025 season.

She now has over 900 points this season and is just the fourth player in league history to accomplish that feat. The other three players are Jewell Lloyd, Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson.

Mitchell finished 15-of-15 from the free throw line agains the Wings.

Fellow Fever guard Caitlin Clark had just 10 points on the night after going 4-of-15 from the field.

Fever center Aliyah Boston had 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Fever forward Makayla Timpson finished with a double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling in 12 rebounds.

Dallas guard Arike Ogunbowale had a team-high 32 points in the Wings’ win over the Fever.

Dallas forward Jessica Shepard added 26 points.

The victory means that Dallas won the regular-season series against the Fever, beating Indiana twice compared to Indiana’s one win over Dallas.

The Fever will look to bounce back when they continue their current road trip on Saturday against the Liberty in New York.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Cleanup is underway across Indianapolis as floodwaters recede, leaving behind damaged homes, destroyed belongings and residents facing the difficult process of rebuilding.

Near Keystone at the Crossing, the water has disappeared from River Edge Lane, but the damage remains visible. Porches have been ripped from homes. Mud covers floors and walls, and belongings that were once cherished have been reduced to memories.

For Angelo Johnson, who lives near the White River, the flooding was devastating. He was rescued after water levels rose about eight feet. Although his home is elevated, roughly three feet of water entered his living room, kitchen and bedroom.

“To say this broke me in half is an understatement,” Johnson said. “Everything I put my money and time [into]—even talking about it… definitely hit hard and hit home.”

Inside the home, the force of the water left extensive damage. Cabinets and drawers were torn apart while mud covered everything inside the home.

Johnson’s car, motorcycle and other personal belongings were also destroyed. His floors and walls will need to be gutted as he begins the long process of repairing his home.

“All at once, it’s just too much to deal with,” Johnson said. “On top of it, we thought we were so prepared for it. It just knocked you down.”

While residents work to clean out their homes, Indianapolis city inspectors are working to document the destruction.

Alena Jones, deputy director of the city’s Department of Business and Neighborhood Services, said teams are conducting what officials call rapid damage assessments. Inspectors are visiting impacted neighborhoods, speaking with residents and documenting damage to homes and businesses.

“Right now we’re making sure we get out to as many impacted areas as possible as quickly as possible,” Jones said.

The information collected by city workers is being provided to the state and federal governments for disaster relief and assistance. Jones said more than 1,300 inspections of homes and businesses have been completed so far. Rapid damage assessment teams are continuing to visit flood-impacted areas through Friday.

Inspectors had not yet reached Johnson’s neighborhood at the time of the report. For Johnson and his neighbors, the inspections could be an important step toward getting the assistance they need to recover.

Despite the heartbreak, Johnson said he is trying to look ahead. He sees the recovery as an opportunity to start over.

“It’s heartbreaking,” he said, “but it’s also a chance to start over.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ravenswood residents piled debris in front of their homes Thursday as cleanup from the historic flooding continued. In the neighborhood, you’d hear power tools whirring, hammers banging and fans running around the clock.

Ronald Wright invited Circle City Broadcasting into his home on Ralston Avenue.

“Raised four kids and a bunch of grandkids,” Ron said, holding back tears as he looked around his home. “It’s hard.”

Wright and his wife have lived in their home for about 60 years.

“We’ve had a lot of good life out here,” he said. “Great neighbors. And neighbors always helping neighbors out here through difficult times like this, which is absolutely amazing.”

Ron said his insurance will cover his home but not everything inside.

“Stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, water heater, garbage disposal, dishwasher. All that stuff is gone,” he said. “I mean it’s all got to get replaced.”

Ron recalled dealing with flooding in the past. He mentioned the flooding from 1991.

“We thought the way that they had explained it, it would be the same height,” Ron said. “And then they revised it to 21-something, and I went, ‘Oh Lord, what am I going to do now?'”

He knew what he had done back then to save his things wouldn’t be enough now.

“I had all my stuff on paint cans, which really helped save a lot of my stuff the last time. But I knew it was out of the question,” he said.

Ron said family have worked around the clock since he returned to the home on Monday morning. His children and grandchildren have cleared things out, cleaned and brought food. There may no longer be any water, but the damage is unmissable.

“I’ve collected these beautiful Christmas boxes for years and I had two big tubs full of those,” Ron said. “And that started my wife off crying. and then that started me off. Just stuff like that. And that’s what’s hurtful. You can never get it back.”

Marion County residents impacted by flooding can report damage online or call 211 or 866-211-9966 to report damage and request assistance.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (WISH) — Floodwaters may have left New Castle, but their impacts are far outlasting their presence.

As of Thursday, a stretch of Riley Road remains closed down after a part of it collapsed during last week’s historic disaster, while crews could be seen at Foster’s Landing Apartments cleaning out units throttled by the floods.

“You would think that while the rain’s coming down, would be the most stressful,” New Castle Mayor Greg York said. “But really, the most intense has been, how are we going to recover from this?”

York said city crews evacuated 375 people during the floods, but many more than that have been left without a home.

“We have thousands of people that have lost furnaces, lost everything on the first floor, lost their hot water heater,” he said. “So, I would say, a few thousand people, it has destroyed their homes.”

York said Foster’s Landing was one of the hardest hit properties in the city, and every single one of the complex’s residents had to be evacuated by boat.

“We (were) watching the water come up, it started coming from the corn field, and slowly it just worked its way up,” said Damon Barker, a resident of the complex, who says he lost all of his personal belongings in the floods. “(First responders came) to the door, beat on the door. They said ‘it’s an emergency evacuation’ and they had two kayaks. (They) pulled us all the way up to the very front of the apartments.”

While the community awaits possible federal government aid, several of the city’s non-profits have banded together to deliver hygiene kits and buckets with cleaning supplies to flood victims.

“We held a meeting yesterday of all the nonprofits and agreed to all work together and coordinate for who needs what across the city,” Reverend Michelle White of First United Methodist Church of New Castle said. “This is exactly what it is to be human and good. It’s everything that we’re supposed to do… I love that people are coming together and supporting each other despite this incredible loss.”

The Hamilton County Council approved $2.85 million in emergency funding to assist residents and businesses with recovery and wreckage removal following recent flooding.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Hamilton County Council approved $2.85 million Thursday in Noblesville to help residents and businesses recover from recent flooding.

The emergency funding provides immediate support for local cleanup efforts and services.

“The County Council is ready to provide any necessary funding for flood relief,” Hamilton County Council President Brad Beaver said.

Of the total amount, the council dedicated $100,000 to Hamilton County Emergency Management. Officials will use these funds over the next few weeks for emergency housing, equipment, and supplies. These resources aim to help people as they begin cleaning up their homes and shops.

The council dedicated the remaining $2.75 million to emergency management for wreckage removal. Local leaders are working with state and federal officials to manage the cleanup.

“This gives us a coordinated way to handle the enormous amount of debris left behind by the flooding while also making sure hazardous materials are properly identified, separated, and disposed of,” said Christine Altman, president of the Hamilton County Commissioners. “That’s important from both a safety and environmental standpoint, but it could also make these expenses eligible for federal reimbursement.”

Hamilton County has asked state and federal officials for more disaster assistance. Specifically, the county is seeking money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Program. This program covers wreckage removal that happens after a disaster.

County officials said they hope more federal help will allow the county to get back a larger share of the money it is spending on the cleanup.

Residents who hire private companies to remove flood wreckage should be cautious. Those costs might not qualify for reimbursement unless the work follows environmental rules and the company provides proper documentation.

Officials said they will provide more details on how they will collect and dispose of wreckage as they finalize those plans.

WASHINGTON (WISH) — A $2 million expansion of first lady Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative was announced Thursday in the Rose Garden at the White House.

The expansion, funded by donations from IndyCar and its broadcast partner Fox Corp., will provide scholarships for students at Indiana University and Purdue University. The move brings the national network to 26 academic institutions, said a news release from the first lady’s office.

“America’s greatest competitive advantage remains in its own people,” Trump said during the ceremony. “Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capability is no less remarkable.”

The initiative helps the foster care community find paths to higher education.

The announcement precedes the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, which is scheduled to happen Saturday and Sunday in Washington.

An IndyCar featuring “BE BEST” and “Fostering the Future” branding sat in the Rose Garden during the announcement. All cars in the upcoming race will feature a specially designed BE BEST logo. Sunday’s race will be on a new course wrapping around the National Mall, with the initiative’s logo displayed on the Seventh Street and Jefferson Drive overpass.

“The first lady is an incredible champion for students across the county, and this initiative is critical to unlocking a more promising future for so many bright young minds,” IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles said in a statement in the release.

Trump established Fostering the Future in 2021 as part of her yearslong effort to support youth. The program focuses on helping foster youth achieve financial independence and stable housing.

Recent milestones for the program include:

Securing $30 million in the fiscal year 2026 federal budget for the Melania Trump Foster Youth to Independence housing program.

Launching Fostering the Future Accounts in June to help youth save and invest.

Supporting the education of the program’s first doctor, who graduated this past spring.

“Camp’s been good,” Steichen said. “The back and forth with our offense and our defense, I’m really pleased with where we’re at. Obviously, we got some things to get cleaned up like always, but really pleased with everything.”

Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart was happy with the work put in during training camp as well.

“I’d say we grew a lot,” Stewart said. “From day one to now, each day we got better. Each day, you got players stepping up. Young guys getting better. And the older guys doing better with their technique. I’d say we’ve been growing every day.”

The Colts had stability at the quarterback position during training camp this year, with Daniel Jones being the team’s starter. Colts tight end Mo Alie-Cox enjoyed the consistency at quarterback.

“Shane’s done a great job pushing us, especially these last two camps have been harder than our camps in the past and different things like that,” Alie-Cox said. “He tries to keep the tempo very up. I would say the biggest difference this year was probably our pass game was way more efficient. I think that just came from just working with one quarterback all camp.”

The Colts are set to play the Falcons on Saturday in a preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. It is the Colts’ second of three preseason games.

Riley Leonard will start at quarterback and play the first half. Anthony Richardson will then play quarterback in the second half.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) —The Federal Trade Commission is warning consumers that scammers are taking over real rental listings and making them their own.

They copy the pictures, description, or virtual tour from a real online rental listing, replace the agent’s contact information with their own, and then post the phony ads on a new website.

The scammers may replace the landlord’s name with their name, lower the price, or ask for money—a deposit, application fee, or down payment.

The FTC said they may also:

Tell you to complete an application with information like your Social Security number, a picture of your driver’s license, paystubs, and other personal details. Then they might use this information to steal your identity.

The scammer might say you need to show you’re creditworthy by sending screenshots of your credit scores. What they really want is to get you to enroll in a paid credit monitoring program with recurring fees.

Indiana’s I-Team spoke with Terri Miller, a consumer education specialist at the Federal Trade Commission. She recommended taking an important step when looking for a rental.

“Search for that rental address online,” said Miller. “If you see another rental with that same address, maybe the price is different or the contact information for the landlord is different. That’s a sign that this is a scam.”

In another version of the scam, scammers may create listings for places that do not exist.

The fake owner might tell you can only secure the property with a wire transfer through Western Union or MoneyGram, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to pay for an application fee, deposit, or first month’s rent. But after you pay, the person you’ve been dealing with will disappear with your money.

Consider it a red flag if the property owner is pressuring you to make a decision or if the price seems too low.

FTC TIPS: How To Tell Whether a Rental Listing Is Real

Search online for the name of the property owner or rental company with the words “complaint,” “review,” or “scam.” See what other people say about their experiences.

Consider the price of the rental. If the rent is a lot cheaper than most rents in the area, it could be a sign of a scam. And if anyone pressures you to make a decision quickly to get a great deal, walk away.

If you can, look at the property before you sign or pay. Visit the property in person, have a friend or someone you know visit it, or watch a video or virtual tour. But know that that’s still not a guarantee that a property is real or available for rent.

If you go in person, ask the rental agent for a business card issued by the company that owns or manages the property. Then check the agent’s ID to be sure it matches the records.

Dealing with a private landlord? Search city or county tax assessment websites to learn who owns a property, then check the landlord’s ID to be sure it matches the records.

If you’re booking a vacation rental, get a copy of the contract before you send any deposit money. Check that the address of the property really exists. And if the property is in a resort, call the front desk and confirm the location of the property and other details on the contract.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana expects to finish its request for federal disaster aid within the next few days, Gov. Mike Braun said Thursday.

State officials are gathering details from areas hit by the storms across Indiana before they submit the formal application. The Republican governor also revealed Indiana has spent $5 million so far on flood recovery efforts.

“The state activated its emergency response, which is $5,000 per family for temporary housing, food and clothing. Whatever’s not being done locally, you’ve got that to call on as well. The federal response, so far, has been to just replace the funds we’ve spent across our state, which has far exceeded $5 million.”

“Today and tomorrow, we should be getting enough together to give that to them (the federal government) to see if we get a major declaration. It has taken that long to get the information they’ll need, which they’ll look to see if it reaches the threshold, and we’ll be very attentive, making sure if it’s close we’ll get the benefit of the doubt. We’ve got a good relationship with the administration.”

He provided an update from the Noblesville Public Safety Building after he toured damage from last week’s storms and flooding in Hamilton County, north of Indianapolis.

Last week’s floods hit Noblesville especially hard. Republican Mayor Chris Jensen said the city alone has suffered at least $10 million in damage. While the floods displaced 14 families, Jensen said no one will face eviction from the hotels where they are staying.

The governor said several state aid programs are open to residents, though he did not have a total for how many people have already applied.

He also discussed what he expects to happen regarding the federal government’s approval of a disaster declaration. He thinks the state has a very strong case for the federal government to step in, based on the scale of what happened in Noblesville and other parts of the state.

The food pantry at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds remained open Thursday for residents affected by the flooding. Over the next few days, however, officials plan to move those services back to the permanent food pantry system.

Jensen said local officials will carefully document every expense to track how state and federal aid dollars are spent.

Despite an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce that caused thousands of illnesses and two deaths, Consumer Reports advises consumers to maintain safe food handling practices rather than avoiding salad greens entirely.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — If you’ve been avoiding salad this summer, you’re probably not alone. Months into a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce, thousands of people nationwide have gotten sick, and the outbreak has also been linked to two deaths. Despite that, Consumer Reports says salad doesn’t have to come off the menu. Carefully preparing salad greens and other produce can help protect you and your family.

Headlines about the cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico are driving demand for locally grown alternatives – with some markets even selling out.

But here’s what may put shoppers a little more at ease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the recalled products are now past their best-by dates and should no longer be available in stores or restaurants. And Consumer Reports says there’s no evidence people need to avoid lettuce or salad greens in general.

But Consumer Reports food-safety expert James Rogers says you should follow good food safety practices, and here’s why. “Growth of produce is international. What we get in our supermarkets and grocery stores comes from these big producers and big distributors.” If one batch becomes contaminated during processing, it can affect a larger mix before it reaches store shelves.

So, it’s important to handle produce carefully once you bring it home from the store. James says, “You can’t remove this parasite 100 percent from washing, but you can reduce the numbers by washing in cold running water, washing your hands before and after, and cleaning your cutting boards.

When produce can be cooked, heating it to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit is the best way to kill the parasite, along with any other foodborne bacteria. Simple steps that can protect you and your family.

Consumer Reports says if you’re planning to eat produce raw, especially firmer foods like melons and cucumbers, scrub or peel them before slicing. That helps keep outside contaminants from transferring onto the part you’re about to eat.
