INDIANAPOLIS — A woman died at a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound late Tuesday night along East 38th Street in Indianapolis, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called just after 11:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a person shot at the intersection of East 38th Street and North Oxford Avenue. Medics were dispatched about five minutes later to a Marathon gas station at the intersection, about four blocks east of North Keystone Avenue.

Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

No additional information was immediately available from IMPD.

Early Next Week: Boundary Approaches, Rain Chances Return

A pattern transition will begin to unfold early next week as a distant storm system tracks into northern Canada over the weekend. While this system will remain well to our north, it will spawn a trailing cold front. This boundary will drift southward toward central Indiana Monday night into Tuesday.

Monday will bring increasing clouds as the boundary begins to move into the area. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs near 70° though sunshine will be more filtered compared to the weekend.

Tuesday: Best Rain Chances Arrive

The best chance for measurable precipitation will come Tuesday as the frontal boundary sags across central Indiana. Any rainfall Tuesday will likely be light and scattered rather than widespread or heavy. Rainfall totals where showers do develop will probably remain under a quarter-inch. Highs Tuesday will trend slightly cooler, settling into the mid-to-upper 60s as cloud cover increases and the risk of showers suppresses daytime heating.

7 day forecast – cooler temps on the way?

Current indications suggest any significant cooling will hold off until at least Wednesday or Thursday of next week, allowing central Indiana to maintain near-to-above-normal temperatures through most of the seven-day period.

Temperature forecasts from Wednesday through Saturday will range from overnight lows in the 40s to daytime highs in the upper 60s and low 70s—remarkably consistent conditions for this time of year. Tuesday marks the potential inflection point, with slightly cooler readings possible if precipitation develops and cloud cover persists. By the middle of next week, a return to seasonably chilly conditions becomes more likely as the frontal boundary clears and northwest flow establishes itself behind the system.

INDIANAPOLIS — One person was hurt in a shooting near the Statehouse Tuesday night, Indiana State Capitol Police said.

Police were called to the scene just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at 10 N. Senate Ave.

Capitol Police Sgt. Robert Johnson said an officer on patrol was approached by a witness who informed him of a man on the street who appeared to have been shot in his lower leg.

The officer found the man and began rendering aid before other officers and medical personnel arrived on the scene, Johnson said.

The man was taken to Eskenazi Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Johnson said the incident was still under investigation, and did not give details on a possible suspect, but he did say there was no ongoing threat to the public.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — Two people — drivers of a scooter and a motorcycle — died in separate crashes Tuesday in Noblesville, police said.

Scooter hits SUV

The scooter crash was reported at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of North Harbour Drive and Carrigan Road, just northwest of the Morse Reservoir bridge.

Parker Shelby, 22, of Noblesville, died when the electric scooter, a Nanrobot D4+, that he was driving east pulled into the path of a 2022 BMW X3 traveling west on Carrigan Road.

Mary E. Werkley, 55, of Noblesville, was driving the car. Werkley did not report any injuries.

The intersection was closed for about two hours after the crash as police collected evidence.

Motorcycle crash on Noblesville-Fishers border

Noblesville and Fishers police were called at 6:07 p.m. Tuesday to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of 141st Street and Catalina Drive in Noblesville. Catalina Drive extends into a housing subdivision in Fishers.

The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s identity.

Witnesses and physical evidence indicated that a 2012 Honda CBR motorcycle traveled eastbound on 141st Street at high speed when the operator lost control and struck a utility pole.

No other vehicles were involved.

The operator suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Noblesville police reconstructed the crash scene, closing both lanes of 141st Street between Promise Road and Copper Boulevard for about two hours.

(CNN) — Since 2021, Christina Applegate has been one of the most famous advocates for living with multiple sclerosis. Now she says she has discovered that she doesn’t actually have the disease.

Applegate shared the shocking news Tuesday during an episode of the podcast she hosts with the actress and MS patient Jamie Lynn Sigler about life with MS, “MeSsy.”

Sigler had been hosting the podcast solo for seven months while Applegate dealt with her worsening health. Talking to Sigler in her return appearance, Applegate got emotional when she described how her doctor had told her that recent test results had ruled out the condition.

“It’s hard to say, but she came into my room and she said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS.’” Applegate said. “I was like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”

MS is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own healthy cells, affecting the nervous system. It can be debilitating for some. For Applegate, her previous diagnosis of MS had offered an explanation for her ongoing struggle with symptoms including tingling and numbness in her extremities, lack of coordination, balance issues and difficulty walking.

Earlier this year, the “Married With Children” star told People magazine she had been spending most of her time in bed because she has been so ill.

Recent testing utilizing new technology led to the conclusion that she does not have MS.

“This may come as good news…but I’m back at square one,” Applegate said tearfully on the podcast.

The finding is not as surprising as it sounds.

A study titled “Incidence of multiple sclerosis misdiagnosis in referrals to two academic centers” found that nearly 1 in 5 patients with an MS diagnosis did not fully meet the criteria for the disease and “had a much more likely alternate diagnosis.”

Applegate and Sigler addressed that during their two-part podcast episode, with a guest appearance by one of the authors of that study Dr. Marwa Kaisey, an associate professor with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center department of neurology.

Kaisey told them that some people had gone on for years with a misdiagnosis of MS, and many of them were prescribed medication to treat it.

The doctor talked about what she referred to as the “push and pull of the diagnostic process.”

“We’re so eager to get people diagnosed because we know that the earlier we start them on treatment the better they’re going to do decades from then,” Kaisey said. “But at the same time we have to be really careful to give them the accurate diagnosis.”

Applegate has had a rough time of it since her initial, now apparently wrong, diagnosis.

Her health deteriorated to the point that she had to leave her hit Netflix series “Dead to Me” which concluded with season three in November 2022.

She authored a memoir titled “You With the Sad Eyes,” which addressed the condition. During the podcast, she told Sigler that the pair of them had become “the poster children for MS.”

Learning about the wrong diagnosis has not led to her being healed and has been a “mindf**k” Applegate said. She sadly marveled at how she had lived with something for years, believing all the while that doctors knew what it was.

“I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse. So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me,” she said. “And that’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?”

She also spoke about her depression and how she has “lost everything” including her job.

“I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this,” Applegate said. “Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’”

The star’s doctors are continuing to try and determine what is causing her symptoms.

(CNN) — President Donald Trump still has two weeks to salvage his Republican congressional majorities and defy expectations of a midterm wipeout.

But all around him, aides and allies are bracing for what happens if he fails.

Administration officials have grown increasingly convinced that steep GOP losses will trigger major personnel shakeups across the government, as Trump hunts for aides to blame and dozens of others weigh abandoning a lame duck presidency at its lowest point.

The angst has turned a White House that once prided itself on single-minded cohesion into the nerve center for a resurgence of Trump world infighting and leaking, said several administration officials, advisers and close allies, who described a toxic mix of jockeying for power and preemptive finger-pointing in the critical final days leading up to November.

“It’s more brutal than any other situation in modern times in the White House,” said one Trump ally. “You can’t trust anybody here.”

The extraordinary jousting within the administration and throughout Trump’s wider circle has broken into public view on several occasions in just the past two weeks, deepening the atmosphere of mistrust and stoking Trump’s own frustrations with the advisers around him.

Trump ousted Kimberly Guilfoyle, his ambassador to Greece and his son’s former fiancée, after a series of damaging reports prompted by a GOP donor’s disclosure that she’d asked him for $100,000 to pay off her credit card.

The president also ordered his White House counsel to investigate a running dispute between two close allies, Alina Habba Mildon and Ric Grenell, over allegations that millions of dollars meant for the Kennedy Center were misallocated, according to a source familiar with the matter (Axios first reported on the investigation).

And Trump fired his new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, after just five days amid several missteps and near-universal backlash to her performance — even among close allies.

Amid those crises, some of Trump’s closest aides — chief of staff Susie Wiles and outside political advisers James Blair and Chris LaCivita — have faced unflattering coverage that sparked questions about their standing within the president’s inner circle.

Their defenders, in turn, contended the stories were being driven by rivals seeking to improve their own relationships with Trump. Blair has since traveled twice with Trump on Air Force One in the past week, in a sign the president still has faith in his core team.

“A knife to James or Chris is meant for Susie,” one source familiar with the dynamics said.

The striking run of incidents has prompted competing efforts across Trump world to smoke out who is leaking against whom and to what end, two people familiar with the matter said. There’s now speculation across the administration over who around Trump will take the fall if the midterms go poorly, which senior officials will be fired, and how many aides might opt to leave in the aftermath, those people said.

“If we lose both the House and the Senate, there’s really no telling what happens,” one Trump adviser told CNN. “Everyone is fair game.”

In a statement, White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed any focus on the administration’s internal dynamics as “baseless speculation.”

“President Trump is laser-focused on maintaining Republican majorities in Congress this November, which is why he is traveling across the country highlighting the historic victories his Administration has delivered for the American people,” he said.

Still, in a sign of the intense maneuvering, Wiles faced a rush of scrutiny after it became clear she wasn’t present when Trump offered Zacharia the press secretary job. Some interpreted the incident as a sign of weakening authority and an opening to push her out of a job that’s allowed her to wield sweeping power, two Trump advisers said.

There was chatter that Wiles might soon step down, especially after a monthslong bout with cancer and as she approaches a two-year mark where many top White House aides traditionally choose to depart. Trump had four chiefs of staff during his first term and none stayed in the job for two years.

But she has not signaled any plans to leave, and Trump recently issued a full-throated vote of confidence, insisting there’s “zero chance” he’d replace her.

“She’s not going anywhere,” a senior administration official said of Wiles.

The election outcome is also expected to determine whether several Cabinet secretaries leave their posts rather than face the prospect of months of investigations from newly empowered Democrats. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is expected to be an early target for congressional Democrats, has long battled speculation that he may end up on the hot seat. But Trump has repeatedly defended his zealous, made-for-TV secretary.

Some officials have also speculated that Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who has been charged with managing some of the most damaging economic fallout of the war with Iran, might opt to leave the administration to pursue a more lucrative job in the energy sector.

Sean Parnell, the chief Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement that Hegseth wasn’t focused on “fake news or DC noise.” An Energy Department spokesperson denied that Wright was contemplating leaving and said he would remain in the job “as long as the president wants him to serve.”

Others, meanwhile, are preparing for the prospect of extensive post-election score settling from Trump or his close allies. Allies of Jay Bhattacharya, the head of the National Institutes of Health, have expressed fear that he could be among those most at risk of being fired following a high-profile clash with White House budget chief Russ Vought over control of his agency’s grant spending, two people familiar with the matter said.

The NIH declined to comment, though one person familiar with the dynamics said officials have improved the working relationship between NIH and Vought’s agency in recent weeks.

A White House official said Trump and his team are focused solely on the midterms.

Administrations traditionally face some level of turnover following the midterms, which simultaneously serve as a natural exit point for many senior officials and an opportunity for the president to reset priorities ahead of the final two years of his term.

But within this administration, where power is measured chiefly by one’s proximity to Trump and allegiances are ever-changing, any fresh vacancies could dramatically shift the balance of power within the White House and alter the trajectory of its agenda.

Trump has not yet given any overt indications that he plans to make personnel changes after the elections, according to people who have spoken with him. And he has expressed optimism that his recent travel blitz on behalf of GOP candidates is having a positive impact on the party’s odds of holding control of Congress.

But many of Trump’s aides and advisers remain grim about their chances. The GOP’s House majority, they believe, is likely lost, and at this point the mission is more focused on limiting the scale of those losses.

While Trump advisers still believe they can hold the Senate, there is broad consternation that the combination of voter backlash against the administration and a handful of poor Senate campaigns has made the effort far more difficult than normal.

It’s a challenge that even Trump has privately acknowledged at times, according to the people who have spoken with him. He’s questioned why the political landscape for the GOP is so poor and vented about the party’s political strategy.

Should Republicans suffer extensive losses on Nov. 3, those people added, Trump is certain to find someone to blame — and it won’t be him.

“The president always loses, for whatever reason, the midterms,” Trump lamented on Tuesday. “If I can get my voters, MAGA Republicans, whatever you want to call (them), if they get out to vote, we’ll win in a landslide. But they have to want to get out to vote, and if you’re not on the ballot, it’s a little harder.”

(AP) — Across 38 seasons of “The Simpsons,” the Halloween-themed “Treehouse of Horror” episodes have always been a treat of spooky stand-alone storylines.

On Sunday, the show surprised viewers with a major resurrection: Apu, the beloved Kwik-E-Mart operator who had not been heard for the better part of a decade, spoke once again in Springfield.

He and his wife, Manjula, were back with a meaty plotline — and the voices of actual Indian American actors: Sunil Malhotra, a veteran voice-over artist, and Janina Gavankar (“The Morning Show”).

“Bringing Apu back feels like a reclamation. It truly IS his homecoming,” Malhotra and Gavankar said Sunday in a joint Instagram post.

Apu’s unheralded return is a remarkable twist to a yearslong discourse about how the character has represented a painful stereotype for some South Asian Americans. After a 2017 documentary by comedian Hari Kondabolu, “The Problem With Apu,” the character was largely exiled from the screen.

How a documentary on Apu became a turning point

In “The Problem With Apu,” Kondabolu, a self-described fan of the Fox show, tried to process his misgivings. He interviewed a slew of celebrities of South Asian origin, including Kal Penn, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Hasan Minhaj, about growing up with the character. They shared memories of being bullied and called “Apu” as an insult. Adding to their view of Apu as just a caricature was that Hank Azaria, a white actor, voiced him.

With the full name of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon Jr., he felt like the “forever foreigner, someone who represents Indians in the United States through this sole typology of being a convenience store owner, being a recent immigrant, having this heavy accent, being really limited in this sort of like American identity,” says Bhoomi Thakore, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut. Thakore notes that Kondabolu’s film raised the notion that Apu was the only portrayal of an Indian character most people knew when he debuted in 1990.

Azaria stepped away from the role after the documentary, continuing to voice other “Simpsons” characters, as Apu fell silent, seen only in the background. Kondabolu, however, had never called for Apu to be canceled. On Monday, he praised “The Simpsons” for devising “a clever solution to all this” and hiring Malhotra and Gavankar.

“I’m also still proud of the public conversation about race and representation my documentary started,” he told The Associated Press in an emailed statement. “Finally, I’m hoping this stops all the hatemail in many languages that has been sent my way over the past decade.”

After years in the background, Apu appears here to stay

In a 2018 episode, “The Simpsons” responded to Kondabolu’s documentary by having Lisa Simpson bemoan how “something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. … What can you do?” The camera then panned to a framed photo of Apu. The gag was branded by some as weak for not directly addressing the controversy.

In a 2020 New York Times interview, Azaria, who by then hadn’t voiced Apu in a few years, announced he would bow out because “it just didn’t feel right.” Later that year, in response to racial reckoning demonstrations, “The Simpsons” announced it would no longer cast white voice actors as characters of color. The show then recast two Black characters, Carl Carlson and Dr. Julius Hibbert, with Black actors.

Kondabolu had not spoken with “The Simpsons” producers about Apu’s comeback, he confirmed to the AP, “but they didn’t owe me that.” And it does sound like Apu is here to stay.

“We love this character and wanted to bring him back in a smart, Simpsons-y way that allowed him to evolve,” executive producer Matt Selman said in a statement. “We’re excited by what Sunil has already brought to the role and look forward to seeing more of Apu in the future.”

Apu was also embraced by South Asians, despite the controversy

A few weeks after “The Simpsons” responded to the documentary, author and producer Amar Shah wrote a series of social media posts and then a Washington Post op-ed on why he felt mostly sentimental toward Apu. When he watched Apu, he thought of his own Indian father hard at work as a convenience store owner and how that shaped his Florida childhood.

“Apu even now is a character that I wouldn’t mind my kids seeing represented because they’ll see aspects of themselves and of their own grandparents,” says Shah, reflecting on his 2018 piece. “I can totally empathize with someone of South Asian origin having a different POV (point of view) than me but this is my childhood. This is my story.”

After watching this latest episode, Shah didn’t sense any significant difference with Malhotra’s performance.

“Obviously, there’s a different voice, tenor, texture and all that. But, the character is always going to be there, his genuine humanity,” Shah says. “I think if they had incorporated this change earlier, it would have been a lot better.”

At a time of anti-South Asian hate, Apu’s return is welcomed

Apu is being revived amid a climate of rising anti-South Asian and Indian hate. Stop AAPI Hate and other research groups have found online use of racist slurs and threats against South Asians and Indians have jumped in the past few years.

Texas Railroad Commission candidate Bo French, a Republican, recently posted a photo of South Asian University of Texas students cheering at a football game and called them “a problem.” Just last week, a man was charged with planning a mass shooting at a Hindu temple outside Chicago. Against that backdrop, Shah welcomes the show’s careful approach reincarnating the character.

“It’s great to see that the show has evolved in time and now, especially with the discrimination and, really, the targeting of South Asians and Indian Americans as of late — questioning our patriotism, our American identity and even whether we’re college football fans,” he says.

The return also coincides with much more representation of prominent South Asian Americans, such as actor and showrunner Mindy Kaling, and people who have broken barriers in office, like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

When Apu first appeared, says University of Virginia associate professor of media studies Shilpa Davé, he was one of the only consistent representations of South Asians on TV.

Now, she says, “South Asians have become a part of the landscape from ‘Bridgerton’ to … ‘Never Have I Ever’ and there’s a plethora of different kinds of representation.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A year removed from the team’s lowest win total in franchise history, a fully healthy Tyrese Haliburton, and a six-month offseason to regroup, the Pacers have another NBA Finals appearance at the front of their minds.

But first, getting off to a hot start to the regular season is the first priority.

“I think that’s something that I haven’t been able to do in my career is have a good start to the season,” Haliburton said. “So that’s definitely something that we want to do as a group. Feel like we definitely prepared well for this game one and these early games.”

The Pacers start the regular season this Wednesday, October 21, on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans. As the blue and gold tip off the season this week, both head coach Rick Carlisle and forward Pascal Siakam are excited to go full speed again.

“We’ve been working hard during preseason,” Carlisle said. “We’ve done some good things. We continue to work on things we need to work on. It’s always exciting when the season starts.”

“It’s been great just getting ready, getting the guys acclimated to everything,” Siakam said. “We’re all just excited to get to the game and start playing. Kind of tired of playing against each other, so go out there and perform.”

Perhaps no one is more excited than Tyrese Halibuton, who missed all of last season rehabbing from an Achilles tear.

“When you’re hurt and you miss a whole year, have a major injury like that… It was the first time I’d thought about what life would be like after basketball,” Haliburton said. “But I do know that I have a lot more to offer. I have a lot more to bring to the table as a basketball player, and I don’t want to retire or be done playing without accomplishing everything I want in life so I’m just excited for the year to come, and chase my dream, and try to win a championship.”

While the Pacers have their eyes on an NBA title, both Coach Carlisle and Siakam know the road to success starts with building the right habits.

“We’re just a process team, and outcomes are distractions, and we just have to keep our eye on the ball with how we do things on a day-to-day basis, and you know the results hopefully take care of themselves,” Carlisle said.

“We know what we have, and I think it’s one thing to talk about it,” Siakam added. “It’s another thing to go out there and do it.”

INDIANAPOLIS — When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, knowing where to turn can make all the difference. There are multiple free resources available including teams trained to respond directly to people in crisis in Indianapolis.

Monday afternoon, a 9-year-old boy and his mother were found dead inside a home. Police say the mother shot and killed her son before taking her own life.

Just one week earlier, another family tragedy unfolded on the northwest side, where police say a man stabbed and killed both of his parents. Police had previously responded to that home for mental health-related calls.

“Mental health issues are just increasing in general. I think every since the pandemic, we’ve seen an increase in that, and we just haven’t seen it stop,” said Jennifer Cianelli, clinical manager for MCAT.

According to OPHS, the city has recorded 3,580 mental-health related crisis calls between January 1st to September 30th, compared to 3154 calls from that same time frame the year before.

One of the many free resources available is the city’s Clinician-led Community Response Team or CLCR.
The program sends trained mental health professionals to certain non-violent crisis calls without police.

CLCR call volume increased from 69 calls in January 2026 to 255 calls in September of this year, which is a 269.6% increase.

There’s also IMPD’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Team, known as MCAT, which pairs officers with mental health clinicians when law enforcement support is needed.

And, the Assessment and Intervention Center helps connect people to additional care and services.

“We want folks to reach out and come to this location, to receive those services that could help get them through their time of need,” said OPHS director Andrew Merkley.

The AIC has up to 60 beds available for people who many need additional care.

“The average length of stay is about 3 to 5 days, so we always have something open,” said Cianelli.

Mental Health First Aid, a free 8 hour course, is another free resource that teaches people how to assess for risk.

“You’re equipping yourself with the knowledge, the tools, recognizing the signs and symptoms and knowing what that language looks like. How to approach that challenge of ‘hey, are you okay’,” said Chunia Felder, Administrator of the Behavioral Health Division at OPHS.

For anyone experiencing emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, the 988 Lifeline is available 24 hours a day. Officials say family members and friends can also reach out when they’re concerned about someone they love.

According to OPHS, between January to September of this year, CLCR responded to 893 crisis calls. Of those responses, 39.6% resulted in an individual being referred to and/ receiving stabilization services.

OPHS says 101 were connected to other mental health services, 81 referrals to emergency departments, 81 referrals to outpatient services, 45 referrals to acute psychiatric care, and 22 referrals to the AIC. 24 calls resulted in the emergency department and no calls resulted in arrest.

While there are still unanswered questions about what happened Monday on Village Lane, the message from city leaders is that people don’t have to wait until they’re in crisis to ask for help.

“You’re not alone. Help is just a phone call away through 988. They can call 911 also and ask for help and they can come into the facility 24/7, 365 days a year,” said Cianelli.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts honored the best kicker in NFL history on Sunday. Pro Football Hall of Famer Adam Vinatieri was officially inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor during halftime of the game against the Tennessee Titans.

“It’s hard to put into words at times because I’m in awe of even having that opportunity,” Vinatieri said.

Vinatieri joined fellow Colts legends with his own spot in Indy’s Ring of Honor just two months after being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“It’s been a whirlwind year. It’s been incredible,” Vinatieri said. “It’s unbelievable seeing my name up in the stadium. For all these years, I looked up there and saw the people that were up there and what they meant to this community and to football in general, and to have the honor to be up there with all the guys is pretty incredible.”

One of those “guys” is the Colts late owner Jim Irsay, who Vinatieri honored by wearing a special shirt during the halftime ceremony.

“Jim’s with us always, always. He’s in my heart and on my mind all the time,” Vinatieri said. “Obviously, when I was making my Hall of Fame speech, I always thought that if I made it, he was the one that was going to bring me up there… I try to honor him in every way I can, and I just saw it fitting that he was maybe on my shirt but he absolutely here with us today so just wanted to give him a salute.”

You can find Vinatieri’s name in the southwest corner of Lucas Oil Stadium, right above the Colts’ tunnel, which is appropriate since Vinatieri is still the Colts all-time leading scorer. But when you ask Vinny, he would’ve put it in a different spot.

“I just wish I was right behind the uprights so that way when the other kickers step up there they have to look between the uprights they go, ‘Dang it!'” Vinatieri laughed. “But no, it’s awesome. I love it. I absolutely love everything about it.”

Vinatieri knows how rare of an honor it is to join the Ring of Honor.

“Only so many people’s names get put up in the ring, but I could’ve never been up there without the other 10 guys on the field and all the coaches that helped along the way, and all the crowd that’s cheering supporting us along the way. It truly is a family affair here,” Vinatieri said.

Vinatieri’s now forever a member of that family.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Farmers at Purdue University are learning how to manage crops in the field using up-to-the-minute data.

Northwest of Purdue University’s main campus, a small combine cuts what appears to be random rows of corn, but a larger picture emerges regarding the crop.

“We’re in a trial here looking at some new short stature corn that’s coming commercially available,” Prof. Dan Quinn said.

“But we do a lot of work with fertilizers, different pesticides, fungicides, equipment management, planning dates. There’s a whole host of aspects that center around helping farmers manage their crop in the field.”

Quinn brings a group to this location each year—to a 1,600-acre living lab—to work, learn, and analyze.

“So a lot of our students actually have their own research projects that they lead, manage, do the data collection, all the data analysis,” Quinn said.

This harvest season, his students are helping with 50 to 60 corn trials, turning field notes and questions into answers for next year’s planting season.

“This trial that we’re standing in right now is actually in collaboration with National Crop Insurance,” Quinn said. “We’re actually looking at leaf defoliation and hail damage responses in short stature hybrids. So when farmers use it and they look at claims and yield loss due to something like hail, we were able to have the data behind it to understand what those yield impacts are.”

The group, which includes students and staff, also traveled across the state to test sites and farms to evaluate how August rain and flooding affected fields in eastern Indiana.

“We actually traveled to kind of east of Muncie,” Quinn said. “A team of us in agronomy spent a lot of time with farmers and consultants in those areas. So we were taking samples, we were taking data and trying to understand what the overall impacts are. We had research trials that actually were within flood environments. So that allows us to kind of evaluate, okay, what varieties, what management practices maybe did a little bit better when they had so much water versus others.”

Once fieldwork is complete, students inside the university’s Innovation Center turn corn kernels into data.

“Here at Purdue we have a huge facility that allows the students to kind of take those samples to get them in a format so they can analyze them in the lab on campus,” Quinn said. “But a lot of it has to do with the objective of the study, but a lot of it looks at disease, nutrients, and quality of that grain.”

The goal is helping Hoosier farmers plan ahead for next year’s planting season.

“There’s always new varieties coming out every year,” Quinn said. “There’s always new technologies, new fertilizers. There’s all these new advancements coming out, but we won’t really know how they perform unless we do them in the field.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Open enrollment is underway for Medicare and many other insurance providers.

Scammers know this and experts say they’re ramping up their efforts to steal your information.

Typically, the scammer will send a text message about open enrollment, giving you a phone number to call or a link to click.

Medicare and insurance carriers are not going to text you out of the blue, unless you’ve opted in for certain communications.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) in Indiana is already seeing an increase in open enrollment scams.

“One of the newer things like we’re seeing this fall already is individuals receiving text messages as well as phone calls from scammers saying, ‘Hey, log on to this particular website, and you can change your plan from here,’” Ben Hudson, Medicare training director for the SHIP said. “Unfortunately, those websites or the direct links that are in the text messages end up taking you to websites that may look legitimate on surface level.”

The fake websites are designed to steal your personal information, especially your Medicare number.

“Your Medicare number can generate millions of dollars in fraud just off one Medicare number potentially,” Hudson said. “Even more so if a fraud than if a fraudster had access to your Social Security number.”

Scammers and dishonest medical providers can file fraudulent healthcare claims and bill Medicare.

Fraud, mistakes and abuse cost Medicare an estimated $60 billion each year.

“If you don’t understand something on your Medicare statement, you have the right and responsibility to call that provider and find out what that charge was for,” Nancy Moore with Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol said.

You can protect yourself by typing Medicare.gov into your browser and click on Find Plans.

If you don’t have Medicare, go through your employer’s portal or type in your insurance carrier’s website.

“Make sure it is the actual website for Humana, Anthem, United, just double-check on that,” Hudson said.

Because of all the healthcare data breaches, the scammers may know a lot about you include your name, doctor, and your medical history.

“1-800-452-4800 is our main hotline,” Hudson said. “We actually have a call center of Medicare-trained counselors at the Department of Insurance building in Indianapolis. But anyone across the state can give us a call.”

You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE if you’re not sure if a text, email or phone call you received is legitimate.

Report Medicare fraud to the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General online [oig.hhs.gov] or at 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477). It helps them track down the scammers and try to stop them.

If you suspect Medicare fraud, call your health care provider or Medicare plan and ask for an explanation. If you aren’t satisfied with their response, call your local Senior Medicare Patrol [consumer.ftc.gov] for help filing a report, or call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE.

INDIANAPOLIS — Rescue dogs are taking center stage in Greenwood this week, bringing high-flying stunts, agility routines and plenty of comedy to audiences.

Puppy Pals Live, a family-friendly dog show featured on Season 15 of “America’s Got Talent,” will perform Oct. 22 at Mad Hatter Shows Event Center.

The show features six rescue dogs — Rudy, Chip, Gizmo, Elvis, Dolly and Boss Man Cash — alongside host Renaldo Calienes.

“We want people to get to know them a little bit more,” Calienes said. “They don’t just get to see cute dogs do cool stunts — you get to know them.”

The dogs perform a variety of stunts, acrobatics and agility routines, with each bringing a distinct personality to the stage. Dolly performs alongside Calienes’ wife, while Chip, at 2½ years old, brings youthful energy that connects with younger audience members.

“These are our pets first,” Calienes said.

The troupe has performed more than 200 shows this year. Boss Man Cash, the oldest dog in the group at 9 years old, leads the pack. Rudy is 8, Gizmo is 6, and Chip is the youngest.

“We’ve added a lot more with the new additions. Dolly does incredible agility and acrobatics,” Calienes said. “Chip adds this level of energy that translates very well to the kids.”

Calienes describes the performance as “controlled chaos and a lot of comedy,” combining impressive canine skills with entertainment for the whole family.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Kyiv is once again receiving early warnings from its partners about incoming Russian missiles following recent strikes that he said occurred without enough notice, leaving civilians vulnerable.

For at least a week, the Ukrainian leader has said that his country has not received early warnings about ballistic missiles aimed at the capital. Such intelligence, he said, saves lives by allowing the public to be alerted and giving military units time to try to intercept the missiles.

Zelenskyy said the change happened after talks with his American counterparts, including a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“We are thankful that intelligence works now, and I’m speaking about early warning, which is very important for our people, for children, adults, civilians, because we can hear when ballistic is coming,” Zelenskyy said on a visit to Norway. “So we are thankful to American side now that it works.”

Speaking to reporters in India, Rubio acknowledged mutual frustration between the U.S. and Ukraine over intelligence sharing and weapons supplies but emphatically denied that the Trump administration has made any changes to previous policy on either issue.

US envoy to go to St. Petersburg

In other developments, Russia unleashed another missile and drone blitz of civilian areas in Ukraine, killing at least nine people, officials said, as Zelenskyy sought more American and European help.

Zelenskyy was joined in Norway by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who has tried without success to steer Russia and Ukraine toward a settlement to end the war. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb also met with the Ukrainian president in Norway’s capital.

Gahr Støre said Witkoff planned to fly to St. Petersburg on Wednesday to meet with Russian leaders, exchange ideas from the Oslo meeting and share proposals from European and American colleagues.

“Today was a good day for peace,” Stubb said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is willing to listen to new U.S. proposals about Ukraine but doesn’t expect any “miracle” from Washington.

At the White House, President Donald Trump stepped up the pressure on Zelenskyy to come to an agreement with Russia as relations between the two men have soured again.

“We want Zelenskyy to make a deal,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’ve given a lot to Ukraine. We’ve gotten absolutely nothing back except grief, death, tremendous monetary loss.”

If that doesn’t happen, “I think it’s going to be a very bad thing.”

Zelenskyy speaks with Rubio after US support slows

The conversation with Rubio came after Zelenskyy told a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers Monday that he believes “some political decision has been made to slow down … support for us.”

Ukraine has nearly run out of American-made Patriot air-defense interceptors that it needs to stop Russian ballistic missiles, according to Zelenskyy, who has pleaded for Washington to send more. But he said the Pentagon is delaying the delivery of missiles that other countries have purchased for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian leader also said speed restrictions were still in place on his country’s use of Starshield, the military-grade version of U.S. company SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink, hampering battlefield operations.

Trump also has waived sanctions on Russia, a move that Zelenskyy slammed as helping Putin push on with Moscow’s full-scale invasion, which will hit the five-year mark in February.

Zelenskyy said he had “a substantive conversation” with Rubio.

“I am grateful for his readiness to help and his clear position,” Zelenskyy said on social media.

Rubio, who arrived Tuesday in India on an official trip, denied that the U.S. is withholding assistance from Ukraine.

“Nothing has changed,” he told reporters.

The Patriot ammunition Ukraine needs is in short supply and is also required elsewhere in the world, Rubio said.

“There has not been some deliberate political directive to go out and harm Ukraine,” he said.

Europe tries to make up for waning US supplies

European countries, worried about Russia’s plans on the continent and viewing Ukraine as a bulwark against Moscow’s ambitions, are trying to take up the slack of any falloff in U.S. supplies, but some key assets are American-made.

European countries and European Union institutions have allocated 237 billion euros ($266 billion) to support Ukraine, compared with 115 billion euros ($129 billion) from the U.S., according to Germany’s Kiel Institute, which tracks assistance to Kyiv.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Tuesday questioned whether U.S. negotiators have been honest brokers in peace efforts. Ukrainian officials say the Trump administration has encouraged Kyiv to surrender land to Russia in return for peace.

“Although American negotiators have been trying to push Ukraine into surrender for … one and a half years now,” Ukraine has not surrendered on Putin’s terms “because Europe has been supporting Ukraine,” Kallas said.

Russian attacks cause power outages in 12 Ukrainian regions

Four people were killed and 27 others wounded, including children, in Russian missile and drone attacks on the Kyiv region over the past day, regional police said.

Three were killed and six were wounded in the Obukhiv district, where warehouses were damaged, police said. In the Bucha district, one woman was killed and 21 people were wounded, eight of them children, while hundreds of buildings were damaged, according to police.

On Tuesday morning, three people were killed and four injured when two vehicles caught fire in a Russian attack on the Kyiv-Odesa highway, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said. The dead included the driver of a shuttle bus that was hit. The bus transports people from Kyiv to the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

Two more people were killed in a Russian attack Tuesday on warehouses on the outskirts of Dnipro in central Ukraine, authorities said.

National grid operator Ukrenergo reported power outages in 12 regions of Ukraine following the Russian attacks.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that its forces carried out drone strikes on logistics centers, port infrastructure and three cargo ships in the port of Reni in the Odesa region. It said that another bulk carrier was hit at sea on its way to Odesa.

Meanwhile, air defenses intercepted 136 Ukrainian drones over multiple Russian regions overnight, the ministry said.

TAIZ, Yemen (AP) — Iran-backed Houthi rebels struck a residential area in Yemen’s third-largest city on Tuesday, killing two teenage girls and renewing attention on the dangers faced by civilians in Taiz, which has been under attack and siege during the country’s escalating conflict.

The Houthis have largely encircled Taiz, cutting it off from most supply routes and putting civilians at “grave risk,” U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk said Tuesday. The U.N. says the siege of the strategically important city in southwestern Yemen has left many residents without food and other necessities as prices soar.

The attack on Taiz came a day after a Houthi strike on a government military camp killed 73 recruits, the deadliest strike since the resurgence of the conflict over the summer, according to a senior Yemeni government official.

The conflict has intensified since forces from the internationally recognized government and Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes on Houthi-held Sanaa International Airport in July, shattering a 2022 ceasefire deal that largely stopped fighting in the country’s civil war.

Yemen has become a widening front in the Iran war that began in February — and the Houthis have increasingly launched attacks on Saudi Arabia because it supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Britain said on Tuesday that it would expand its military support for Saudi Arabia to include “defensive” air patrols by Royal Air Force jets.

UN says Houthi siege of Taiz risks humanitarian crisis

Heavy fighting between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces caused extensive damage in a densely populated residential area of Taiz. Six people were wounded in the Houthis’ deadly attack there.

Resident Zainab Ali said she was away when the strike occurred but returned to find her home had been destroyed.

“We are a family of orphans, and we do not know what to do,” she said.

Late on Tuesday, Yemen’s government forces claimed — without providing evidence — that they had thwarted Houthi attacks in several areas across Taiz and had killed dozens of Houthi fighters. The claim could not be independently verified, and the Houthis did not immediately comment. The rebel group rarely releases its own casualty figures.

A strategic gateway to southern Yemen, Taiz has been a focal point of fighting since the civil war began more than a decade ago; it is also one of Yemen’s most important historic and cultural centers.

Houthi fighters began advancing again on Taiz last month, after capturing the port city of Mokha, an area vital to controlling shipping through the Red Sea.

The Houthis have besieged Taiz as part of their monthslong offensive, repeatedly targeting Yemeni government forces with missiles and artillery.

“Humanitarian aid must be immediately allowed to enter the city and its passage must be facilitated. Civilians wishing to leave must be allowed to do so freely and safely,” Türk, the U.N. human rights chief, said.

He urged the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces to avoid using explosive weapons in areas where they could hit civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Britain pledges additional support to defend Saudi Arabia

While Saudi Arabia said Tuesday that it intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis, the country has struggled to defend against the rebel group’s missile and drone attacks despite far superior U.S.-supplied arms.

“Saudi Arabia is in a very difficult position,” but the United States is not prepared to send troops to help, Tom Barrack, the U.S. envoy to Syria and Iraq, told the Global Security Forum in Doha, Qatar.

Barrack said President Donald Trump “has been clear that he supports Saudi Arabia, and the backing that they need logistically we’ll supply, but America getting involved in a ground kinetic battle somewhere else seems fruitless.”

U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said the British government would expand its support to Saudi Arabia to include defensive patrols to protect Saudi cities from attacks. It means British planes would attack missiles or drones in the air, but would not strike Houthi targets on the ground. Britain had already offered to help with in-air refueling of Saudi planes.

The Egyptian government also will deploy air defense systems and aircraft to help repel missiles and drones fired toward Saudi Arabia but won’t deploy ground troops to Yemen, according to a regional official who was briefed on the matter. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to reporters.

The matter still requires parliamentary approval.

Houthis attacked a Yemeni military camp as recruits were being trained

The Monday strike on the al-Alam military camp hit while recruits were lining up in formation for a training session. More than 200 recruits were wounded in the attack.

Videos from the area circulated online and analyzed by AP showed many motionless bodies lying on the sandy ground of the camp.

The recruits were all aged between 18 and 20, Shabwa governor Awad Ibn al-Wazir told AP. They were being trained to provide security in the province and not for combat operations, he said.

Yemen plunged into civil war in 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and much of northern Yemen and forced the government into exile.

A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year in an attempt to restore the government to power. The conflict killed more than 150,000 people and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
