COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — A local school district is releasing a first-of-its-kind report on employee injuries.

Indiana’s I-Team has been investigating teacher injuries since 2019. The investigation found a range of injuries, including teachers being hit, punched, kicked, bitten, headbutted, and having their hair pulled. Some suffered concussions.

As the I-Team has reported, Indiana is repealing a law that requires schools to publicly report when a student injures a school employee on the job.

(Provided Photo/Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.)

Indiana schools previously tracked school employee injuries and annually reported the data to the Indiana Department of Education. The department compiled the numbers, broken down by school district, into a publicly available report.

Under a new law, House Enrolled Act 1249, schools will be required to report workplace battery incidents to the Indiana Department of Labor starting in July 2027. The new law does not require the Department of Labor to publicly report school employee injury data.

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. adopted a new policy that requires the district to track when a worker is injured by another person while on the job. The district recently released its first report under the policy, which revealed 319 total injury incidents from July 2025 to June 2026.

The report also found 18 instances where school employees missed work because of an injury.

Jason Major, a school board member in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp., authored the policy. He said it was designed to protect the district’s 2,000 employees.

(Provided Photo/Jason Major)

“I think the significance of this report is it really is allowing us to have some full transparency of what the situation is in the classroom,” Major said. “I think it is going to really help drive conversation.”

At a July meeting, school board members and staff discussed the new data.

“The teachers are reporting and that is very important because we need to understand the reasons why a teacher is getting hit, punched, scratched, scraped, bit, hand slammed in the door so we can fix those issues,” Major said at the meeting.

Eighty-nine percent of reported injuries happened at the elementary level, while 11 percent occurred in middle or high school.

Laura Hack, director of elementary education at BCSC, said there are many reasons behind the numbers, including students with special needs and new students.

“It could be a new student who has come into our setting and classrooms and that may be bringing past experiences and past trauma,” Hack said at the meeting.

Many of the students involved in injury incidents are on an Individualized Education Program, or IEP.

Major said he was encouraged by the response to the report.

“We had a lot of discussion that we never had around this, because people saw numbers and they started to ask questions about how can we make it better, and that’s the whole goal,” Major said.

Last summer, an I-Team investigation introduced Melissa Streeval, a teacher who resigned from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. after she said she was hurt on the job by students. She said both times, she was trying to stop a student from hurting other children on the playground.

In this undated photo, Melissa Streeval shows letters from the school district’s workers’ compensation administrator. (WISH-TV Photo)

“He was stomping on my feet, kicking my legs,” Streeval said. “The bottom half of my legs were completely red and swollen. I just couldn’t calm him.”

Streeval left the district because of safety concerns.

Major hopes this new report sends a message that the district takes the issue seriously.

“It’s wonderful that all the employees are putting the reports in,” Major said. “That’ll help us then take the next step, which is start to identify how we make improvements.”

The last state report on school employee injuries is scheduled for release next month.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Students in Greenfield-Central schools will return to class Monday, and Superintendent Harold Olin says staff are ready to welcome them for the 2026-27 school year.

Olin appeared on “Daybreak” Friday to discuss the upcoming year. He said staff and teachers just completed three days of preparation and are ready for students to fill the halls again.

The new school year brings a major structural change as the district consolidates its two intermediate schools into Maxwell Intermediate School. While start times have not been drastically adjusted, some younger students may see schedule shifts of up to 10 minutes.

Olin said teachers spent recent workdays preparing classrooms and meeting families during district events.

“I’ve been walking the buildings, and our teachers are excited,” Olin said. “We’ve had our back-to-school nights. I think four of the schools have had them in the last two days.”

The district also celebrated the opening of Amplify Hancock, a new career center that held a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 21. The facility, the first new career center in the area in nearly 50 years, will serve about 450 students countywide.

Greenfield-Central will send about 160 students to the center, which also serves Eastern Hancock, New Palestine and Mt. Vernon. Olin said local dignitaries and elected officials, including Rep. Jefferson Shreve, attended the ribbon-cutting.

Olin highlighted academic milestones from the previous year, including the corporation’s highest-ever graduation rate and a 95 percent passing rate on IREAD-3 reading scores. He said second-grade scores reached about 80 percent passing, which Olin described as a significant increase.

“Certainly it’s a lot of dedication from staff,” Olin said. “They spend a lot of time with students, giving them many opportunities to demonstrate mastery.”

A new state law passed by the General Assembly this spring will change cellphone rules during the school day. Students must store phones away for the entire day, including during lunch and passing periods. For high school students, phones will not be accessible from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“We’ve not allowed much cellphone use during the school day, but students could access them during passing periods and at lunch,” Olin said. “That will change. Phones must be stored away all day.”

While phones must remain in backpacks or lockers, parents can still reach children through the ParentSquare app. The district implemented the app to address parental concerns regarding communication and emergency contact during school hours.

As families prepare for the start of classes Monday, Olin recommended focusing on rest and returning to academic routines over the weekend.

“It’s simply getting back into routines, going to bed at a decent time here these last few days and just making sure that you’re rested and ready for those routines,” Olin said.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 21-year-old accused of sexual misconduct with a minor is believed to be the father of an infant found abandoned on the city’s east side.

Officers found the infant covered in blood near the intersection of Lace Bark Lane and Long Wharf Drive around 11:30 p.m. July 24.

The woman who gave birth has been identified as a 16-year-old girl who was 15 at the time of conception and did not know she was pregnant before giving birth.

The alleged father of the baby is 21-year-old Hernsley Pierre.

The victim told police Tuesday that she and Pierre had sex “numerous times” at his house and had been together since January 2026. The girl added that she had not seen Pierre in at least two months and believed he had left for a different state about a week prior.

On Thursday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Child Abuse Unit officers responded to reports that the man believed to be the father was at the hospital with the victim.

In a statement to police, Pierre acknowledged that he knew the victim and she was his girlfriend. He claimed they started having sex in March 2026 and followed that statement by saying, “That baby isn’t mine.”

Pierre denies knowing the victim was pregnant.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Pierre did not know how old the victim was when their relationship began. He claimed the victim told him she was 17 about to turn 18 and that he only realized she was 15 when he picked her up from high school.

The affidavit also reports: “Hernsley stated that, once he found out that she was only 15, he did not stop having sex with her. He stated that he knew it was illegal, and he stated that the reason he knew it was illegal is ‘Everyone in the world knows that it is illegal to have sex with minors.”

Pierre was then arrested on a preliminary charge of sexual misconduct with a minor.

IMPD credits a community tip for helping locate the mother.

“If it wasn’t for that community tip coming forward, leading us to where the mother was; a very young individual, and that individual being forthcoming with us…we would’ve never gotten to the point we’re at today,” said IMPD Public Information Officer Tommy Thompson.

Thompson said this will likely be a long investigation because detectives must track down facts and information dating back more than nine months.

While Indiana has a Safe Haven law that allows mothers to give up their newborns without penalty at a hospital or baby box, IMPD cannot speak to whether this case falls under that law since the baby was left in a public place and not handed to a person.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — If you are looking to refresh your wardrobe, the Indiana Vintage Market is coming to the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds & Event Center this Saturday and Sunday.

Brandon Douthitt, co-owner of the Indiana Vintage Market, joined WISH-TV’s “Daybreak” to share what goes into running the event.

Douthitt said what sets the vintage market apart from a typical flea market is that every item is curated. He said he selects vendors to ensure the clothing matches the interests of the shoppers.

“We’re trying to make the market about the customers,” Douthitt said.

Many younger shoppers are particularly interested in clothing made before 2000, according to Douthitt. In addition to apparel, the market will feature toys, stuffed animals and sports memorabilia.

Douthitt said his mission with the market is to promote sustainable shopping. He wants shoppers to know that buying secondhand does not mean sacrificing quality. He noted that markets like this help keep clothes out of landfills and extend the life of the garments.

The Indiana Vintage Market runs from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2 at the Hamilton County fairgrounds.

RUSH COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Robert Brown knew his mother would not give him permission to join.

It was 1944, and Brown had just turned 17. He was old enough to join the armed forces as World War II raged, but only if his parents gave him permission. Brown said he waited until the following year.

“And I said, ‘Mother, all of my friends are in the service. Now, I’ve got to go in.’ She said, ‘OK,’” he said. “So my career started on March 12, 1945.”

It was the beginning of a Marine Corps career that would span 24 years and 3 of the biggest wars in American history.

Now 99, Brown said he was still in training when World War II ended with Japan’s formal surrender on Sept. 2, 1945. Like many American servicemen who joined late in the war or spent the conflict stateside, he said he was sent to Japan for occupation duty. Brown said his first task was to oversee Japanese prisoners returning from China.

World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars span a combined total of barely 32 years of American history. According to the Department of Defense, the 3 wars put a combined total of more than 30 million Americans into uniform, with World War II accounting for about 16 million. Because those 3 conflicts happened in such rapid succession, many personnel served in at least 2 of those conflicts.

Brown belongs to a select group of veterans whose service overlaps with all 3 wars. Officials with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs told News 8 they estimate there are only about 1,318 living veterans who served during all 3 conflicts.

Brown said he switched to the Marine Corps Reserve at the end of the 1940s so he could maintain his rank. Then, when the Korean War began in 1950, he returned to active duty. That November, Brown fought in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, a fighting retreat in the worst winter conditions the U.S. armed forces have ever faced. American troops faced an onslaught of more than 100,000 Chinese and North Korean troops in temperatures that reached 40 degrees below zero.

“Pardon my English, but it was colder than hell,” Brown said. “You can’t do much of anything but try to keep as warm as possible.”

Brown got through the battle unscathed, but his luck ran out on April 24.

“My runner, Cpl. Walter Holder, was off to my right,” Brown remembered. “I said, ‘Walt, what’s wrong with me?’ He said, ‘You’ve been wounded.’ And as soon as those words were said, he got up and I said, ‘What are you going to do?’ He said, ‘I’m going to carry you down and put you on a truck.’ I said, ‘I can walk.’ He said, ‘No, you can’t. You got hit in the hip.’ So he took me over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry and of course my head was hanging down in the back, and I could see the dirt was flying up. I said, ‘Walter, they’re shooting at us!’ He said, ‘Yeah, I know. We’ll make it, don’t worry.’ And I said, ‘Well, I ain’t worrying.’”

Brown said Holder was able to get him down to a supply depot and put him on a truck with about 15 other wounded Marines. He said he was taken to a MASH hospital and was later evacuated to Japan.

Brown was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries. After another short stint in the Marine Corps Reserve, he returned to active duty in 1952 and spent virtually the rest of his career in that capacity. During that time, he served as a drill instructor at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, a trainer at the Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, and as an ROTC instructor at Princeton University. He said that last role was probably his favorite memory from his time in the Marines.

“There was something about that community that set it apart from any other town,” he said.

Brown closed out his career with a roughly yearlong tour of duty at Da Nang in Vietnam from March 1968 until February 1969, during which time he served as the sergeant major of a supply unit. He said he did not see combat. Brown retired as a sergeant major effective April 1, 1969. He spent the next 22 years in Pennsylvania as a truant officer and a school bus fleet manager before returning to Rush County, settling on 5 acres that had once belonged to his grandfather.

Brown said it is strange to think he served during 3 of the biggest wars in U.S. history. He said joining a combat unit at age 18 forces one to grow up quickly or else be left behind. He said he hopes younger generations take away from his story the importance of service.

“Young men today need to go into the service to grow up,” he said.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Buying a gun for someone who cannot legally possess one could cost you up to 15 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and the Department of Justice joined forces Friday for the 26th year of the nationwide “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign. The collaborative effort raises public awareness about the dangers and consequences of a straw purchase, which occurs when an individual buys a firearm for a person who is not legally allowed to purchase or own one.

According to the ATF, firearms obtained through straw purchases are frequently linked to gang-related activity, violent crime, domestic abuse, and drug trafficking.

The robust campaign includes 18 billboards throughout Indianapolis, more than 140 displays on IndyGo buses and stops, more than 1,300 radio spots across five of the top FM stations in the market, and 4.4 million social media impressions. The ATF said the media campaign will highlight the seriousness of straw purchases in the region.

“If you compare the numbers from last year to this year, we doubled the numbers when it comes to trafficking cases. So that means it’s a serious issue that we are dealing with,” ATF Special Agent in Charge Jorge Rosendo said.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Wheeler for the Southern District of Indiana highlighted several straw purchase and gun trafficking cases his office is currently working.

“Right now, my office is prosecuting a straw purchasing and gun trafficking ring of 15 individuals who lived and operated here in Indianapolis,” Wheeler said. “Leaders of the ring would pay people without criminal records to purchase dozens of firearms with the purpose of reselling them to those who could not legally buy guns.”

The campaign also partners with firearm retailers by providing resources on how to spot warning signs to identify potential straw purchasers.

“You’ll go to any gun shop, and they’ll have our materials, talking about these things,” said Joe Bartozzi, president and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. “So, the success is the momentum. Building that knowledge, building that momentum about keeping guns out of the wrong hands.”

Chief Tanya Terry of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said campaigns like these only strengthen local law enforcement’s efforts to keep communities safe.

“We are certainly able to more effectively identify, locate and take those illegal firearms out of our neighborhoods and arrest and hold accountable violent offenders in our neighborhoods,” Terry said.

The ATF said the Indianapolis-area “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign will total nearly 21.5 million gross media impressions. It is funded entirely by the firearm industry and is now complemented by funding allocated to the ATF by Congress.

The campaign runs through September.

“If we have all the talent, we have everyone we need to get where we need to go, we just have to continue to make sure we’re building a culture that is promoting that inner belief and inner faith that we can do it,” Irsay-Gordon said.

Irsay-Gordon added that the sense of urgency has never been higher.

“I think this year we’ve got all the right guys that we need to be healthy,” Irsay-Gordon said. “We’ve got a great quarterback room. I think we just have to, like I said, keep believing that we’ve got everything we need to get where we need to go.”

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is entering the final season on his contract.

He is practicing with the team in Westfield and is not holding out for a new deal. He has expressed interest in returning to the Colts, saying he “would love to be a Colt for life.” Taylor also said there have been some good conversations and he has faith in his agent and the front office.

Colts owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon also wants Taylor to remain a Colt.

“Well, I love Jonathan (Taylor),” Irsay-Gordon said. “I’m really proud of the leader that he’s become on our team. I mean, he’s one of our pillars. His picture’s on the stadium for a reason, and I would love it if he would be a Colt for life.”

Quenton Nelson is also a core Colts player that is entering the final season on his contract. There is a lot riding on this season for the Colts, with Irsay-Gordon has said the sense of urgency has never been higher. However, that does not mean the Colts are not interested in bringing back some of their cornerstone players on expiring contracts.

“I think that’s something that Chris (Ballard) is looking into and he keeps me informed on it,” Irsay-Gordon said. “But yeah, if it makes sense, then we would certainly do that.”

Taylor played all 17 games last season for the first time since 2021. He had 1,585 rushing yards and a league-leading 18 touchdowns. Taylor was a Pro Bowler for the third time in his career.

The Colts continue training camp on Saturday with practice scheduled from 4-5:30 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Michelle Coy Davis, founder of Eclipse staff and security, is managing a team of about 170 employees each day to handle security and cleaning for the Indiana State Fair. The crew includes security personnel, ID checkers and clean team members, with operations running from 6 a.m. to midnight for the duration of the 15-day event.

Preparation begins well before the gates open. Davis said recruitment typically starts 30 to 45 days before the fair to ensure the staff is ready for the high-traffic environment.

The team operates out of a centralized command center in Indianapolis, which serves as the hub for decision-making and staff check-ins. Davis said Eclipse is the only company in Indianapolis with such a facility.

“It’s basically our home base where we’re able to make all the decisions there. It’s the check-in process for all of the staff. And so we begin our day there and it’s operational throughout the day, but then we end our day there also,” Davis said.

Running a 15-day event comes with logistical demands. Eclipse uses split shifts to manage the long daily schedule, and Davis said the summer heat adds another layer of difficulty.

“I think the two biggest parts that is challenging for us, it’s just very long,” Davis said. “And the other part is it just gets hot. So staying hydrated is a big part of what makes it successful and just making sure we have plenty of water and plenty of snacks available too.”

Cleaning operations are divided into morning and afternoon shifts, with crews focused on restrooms and spills throughout the fairgrounds. The fairgrounds supply the necessary materials, and the Eclipse team manages their storage and deployment. Davis said keeping the venue clean directly affects the visitor experience.

Safety efforts center on educating the public about prohibited items and preparing for peak attendance periods. Crowds grow in the afternoons and evenings, driven by nightly concerts and events such as $2 Tuesdays.

“I think the biggest part is the education. I think the fair does a really great job of making sure that the information gets out to the public of what the prohibited items are,” Davis said. “Just being prepared, I think that’s a big part of getting to the fair and having a good time.”

Beyond the day-to-day operations, Davis said the contract carries personal significance. As a female business owner and mother of two daughters, she sees the work as a chance to show what is possible for the next generation of women.

“I’m hoping to pave the way for them of what their future could be, of being whoever they want to be,” Davis said. “There’s so much opportunity out there, you just gotta go grab it.”

Eclipse is currently accepting applications from those interested in joining the fair staff.

Senator Todd Young discussed several legislative priorities and foreign policy strategies during an interview with All INdiana Politics, including the Stop Insider Trading Act, the SHIPS for America Act, and the ongoing conflict with Iran.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sen. Todd Young said members of Congress should not be allowed to act on private information when buying or selling stock.

Young, a Republican, is a vocal supporter of the Stop Insider Trading Act, which passed the U.S. House last week but has not yet been taken up by the Senate. In an interview for All INdiana Politics, Young said the ban would be a simple way of restoring the public’s faith in Congress.

“There aren’t many institutions where trust is lower than in Congress, so let’s get our house in order,” he said. “Let’s take that easy step of ensuring that those members of Congress, all of us, who are exposed to sensitive, nonpublic and market-moving information on a daily basis aren’t acting on that information in unfair or unjust ways.”

The House’s version of the National Defense Authorization Act, approved this week, includes most of Young’s SHIPS for America Act, which would incentivize domestic shipbuilding in an effort to rebuild America’s shipyards. Young said he thinks the SHIPS for America Act has a good chance of becoming law at this point. He said the act could end up creating jobs in the industrial Midwest, including in Indiana.

“I understand that our state has already heard from some of the world’s leading shipbuilders about potentially investing next to the integrated steel mills we have in The Region,” he said, adding Indiana is already home to numerous component manufacturers who might be able to take part.

Young, who serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee, also responded to the latest developments in the war with Iran. He said Iran’s remaining nuclear material and infrastructure are buried under a mountain, so a smart strategy would be to continue to monitor known underground sites and attack any activity around them. Young said the Trump administration should shift to a more long-term strategy with Iran and signal it is willing to keep up pressure on the country’s regime for as long as it takes to dismantle the program. In the meantime, he said the United States should support efforts to install infrastructure in Gulf countries that eliminate the need to ship oil through the Strait of Hormuz altogether. About one-fifth of the world’s oil and one-third of its natural gas goes through the strait, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Young also shared his memory of working with the late South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. He said he first met Graham at a carry-out in Washington shortly after Young launched his first run for the Senate in 2016.

“Even though he had a lot on his mind, he asked me if I wanted to join him, sit down and break some bread,” he said. “I’m going to miss him dearly. It seems a bit surreal that I won’t be seeing him again.”

(WISH) — Governor Mike Braun (R) announced Friday that that the Indiana Department of Homeland Security will be establishing an Office of Cybersecurity.

According to a release from IDHS, this office will be established in an attempt to preemptively protect against cyberattacks. “We are not going to sit around hoping a cyberattack doesn’t happen,” said Gov. Braun in the release.

The establishment of the Office of Cybersecurity follows the closure of the Indiana Executive Council on Cybersecurity. The release said that this new office is “a new phase” for Indiana’s protections against cyberattacks.

The office aims to coordinate the entirety of Indiana’s government agencies, allowing them to more easily coordinate with each other to prevent a cyberattack.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — TB’s Dirty Pop Shop, a mobile beverage business based in Brownsburg, is celebrating its first two months of operation. The business specializes in customizable sodas, transforming standard soft drinks with unique flavors, cold foam and creamer.

The family-run venture operates throughout Hendricks County and offers a menu of specialized drinks inspired by the owner’s family members. In addition to regular street service, the mobile unit is available for private bookings, including weddings, parties and school events.

Troy, the owner of TB’s Dirty Pop Shop, said the business was created to offer a specialized experience for soda drinkers. “Well, really, it was a team effort between me and my wife and my daughter,” Troy said. “She helped us out with that also. We wanted to give something different than, you know, just your regular Coke or your regular Sprite.

We wanted to add some different flavors to it. Maybe like a strawberry or a vanilla. Throw some cold foam in there and some creamer on there as well.”

The menu features several family-inspired drinks, including the TB Splash, which features Sprite, raspberry, strawberry and vanilla.

Troy’s wife created the Caramel Currant, a mixture of Diet Dr. Pepper, salted caramel, coconut cream and salted caramel cold foam. Troy noted that the syrups used in these drinks are sugar-free. He described the TB Splash as his top favorite and one of the most popular items on the menu.

Another drink, the Nuffy Pop, was named after Troy’s daughter. “I call her Nuffy when she was born,” Troy said. “I call her that she’s a Nuff. So I shorten it for Nuffy, so we call it the Nuffy Pop.”

For customers who prefer sparkling water, the shop offers the Sparkle Berry. Troy admitted that while he is not a fan of sparkling water himself, the drink remains a popular choice for customers.

Beyond the established menu, the business allows for full customization of any beverage. “So they can make it their own and make them feel like they’re part of something as well. Like, you know, it’s always good to be able to make your own. You can’t always make your own shoe or something, but we got it where you can make your own drink.”

TB’s Dirty Pop Shop is currently booking for various summer gatherings. “We are based out of Brownsburg. Right now we have our Hendricks County. We are in Hendricks County a lot,” Troy said. “We can also book us for certain events, private events, weddings, parties, school events, dances and things like that. If you would like to book us, you can find us on all the social media pages.”

It took several months to prepare the mobile unit for service and Troy indicated that the van is still being improved. “It took a while. It took a while. It took probably a couple months to get everything done and we’re not totally done with it yet. We’re still things that we want to do and things we want to add to it,” Troy said.

He noted that despite the challenges of starting the business, the experience has been rewarding. “It feels great. You know, it’s been challenging, but we’re going to keep going and we’re going to keep trying to build on this,” Troy said.

Troy plans to expand the business by adding another vehicle and hiring local students.
