INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The two most populous counties in central Indiana on Monday reported more homeowners saw lower property tax bills this year, but many paid more.

This year is the first year for property tax bills following the implementation of the state’s new property tax law. Last spring, Gov. Mike Braun, a Republican, said the new law would mean lower property tax bills for most homeowners.

Numbers from Marion and Hamilton counties suggest this largely was the case, with some important caveats. Marion County Treasurer Barbara Lawrence, a Democrat, said a little more than 118,000 residential properties owed less than last year, while about 99,000 paid more. Last year, nearly 174,000 homeowners paid more in property taxes compared to the year before, while a little more than 41,000 paid less.

Lawrence said the new law overall has been a mixed bag, though homeowners paying less outnumber those paying more.

Hamilton County Assessor Todd Clevenger, a Republican, provided estimates for how the average homeowner’s tax liability changed in each of the county’s 23 taxing districts. In six of them, the average homeowner paid more. The smallest increase was $3.79 in Westfield, while the largest was $189.13 in Sheridan.

The rest of the districts saw tax liability drops that ranged from $4.32 in rural parts of Sheridan to $481.88 in Wayne Township. Both Clevenger and Lawrence said individual homeowners’ bills will vary because property taxes are based first and foremost on assessed valuation. Lawrence said assessed valuation depends above all on what your neighbors’ homes are selling for.

“Probably the single biggest factor in a tax bill is the assessed value, which is the value of your property,” she said. “It is impacted by what your neighbors’ homes are selling for and homes in the area in which you live, so a hot real estate market can impact your assessed value.”

The spring property tax payment deadline has now passed. The fall deadline is Nov. 10.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Qualifying format for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 is changing.

IndyCar announced Monday that it’s adding an additional qualifying round on Sunday called the Final 15. This will replace the traditional last chance qualifying round, which would bump the slowest car out of the field of 33, since there are only 33 entries in this year’s field.

Instead, all teams will have qualifying runs on Saturday to try to advance to Sunday. Cars ranked 10-15 will then compete in the Final 15 round beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday to fight for the final three spots in the Top 12 round. Teams not making it will then earn positions 13-15.

The rest of the Sunday’s schedule remains the same. The newly-determined Top 12 cars will then fight for a spot in the Fast Six. Top 12 will run at 5 p.m. with the Fast Six scheduled at 6:35 p.m. The fastest car from that group will then earn this year’s coveted pole position.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou is the defending Indy 500 champion after a historic year in the IndyCar Series last year, while Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard returns to the IMS oval with the momentum of Saturday’s Sonsio Grand Prix win on the IMS road course.

Practice for the 110th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Qualifying begins Saturday at 11 a.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WISH) — The celebrations continue for the national champion Indiana Hoosiers.

IU was honored at the White House Monday afternoon as President Donald Trump introduced them to a crowd of supporters and media on the South Lawn.

Trump marveled at the Hoosiers undefeated season and emphasized how impressive the turnaround from only three wins in 2023 to a perfect 16-0 national championship season two years later.

He especially congratulated head coach Curt Cignetti on his orchestration of the comeback.

“I’m really honored to be with this guy,” Trump said, referring to Cignetti. “It’s not like he inherited a great program. He inherited something that was less than great, and he made it into something that has probably never been done, at this level, never been done before. Congratulations, Coach.”

Trump shook Cignetti’s hand before yielding the microphone to the Hoosiers head coach, who immediately led the crowd in a Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoosiers chant.

“To me it’s a simple message: Prepare the right way every single day to a high standard, and anything is possible in life,” Cignetti said a part of his speech on the South Lawn. “The only limitations are those between your ears, and you can’t have any of those either. So, go IU!”

Cignetti then presented the president with a special IU jersey with the number 47 and Trump on the name plate, plus gave him a commemorative national championship football. The president then showed the team around the Oval Office.

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza was not in attendance, as he prepares for his first season in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders. Trump said Mendoza called him to express his condolences for missing the big moment.

“If (Mendoza) was not here for other reasons like he didn’t like Trump or he didn’t want to come, I wouldn’t have even mentioned him,” Trump said during his speech. “But he’s a great guy actually and he is actually a big fan of what we’re doing for our country.”

Wide receiver Charlie Baker and defensive back Jamari Sharpe both spoke during the event, as well.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Some rain & thunder is possible Tuesday night but most of the work week is looking pretty good. Warmer & more humid weather builds in for the coming weekend.

MONDAY NIGHT:

Mostly clear, cool, and quiet. Lows in the mid to low 40s.

TUESDAY:

Partly cloudy, breezy, and warmer. Highs in the mid to upper 70s. Southwesterly winds could gust near 30 mph at times. Conditions are looking pretty good for the first day of Indy 500 practice.

TUESDAY EVENING/NIGHT:

Chance of rain & storms. A few storms could produce gusty winds, but the overall severe risk remains on the lower side for Central Indiana. Milder lows in the 50s can be expected.

WEDNESDAY:

Variably cloudy, breezy, and cooler. Highs mainly in the 60s. A few spotty showers are possible, especially early in the day.

7 DAY FORECAST:

The upper level pattern that has lead to the recent cooler than average conditions will flip-flop and allow warmer air to return to the Great Lakes. Highs in the 80s appear on track for the coming weekend, along with higher dew point values. It will start to feel more like May again.

There are also signs that we’ll get into more of an active weather pattern with more rain & storm chances by the weekend and early next week. For now, we are keeping the daily rain chance on the lower side and currently don’t anticipate any washouts… but keep in mind any rain could interfere with activities at IMS.

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to check their security cameras after multiple vehicles were targeted on Sunday.

Resident Carissa Swalls shared surveillance video that shows one of several vehicle break-ins reported across Johnson County. This break-in happened in Greenwood along Oakleigh Parkway.

“It was very violating. I think reality hit last night when I was going to bed because it was right underneath our bedroom window, and we didn’t hear anything and it’s like they’re right there,” Swalls said.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says at least 16 vehicles were targeted in multiple neighborhoods with the suspects stealing cash and at least in one case, a firearm. One vehicle was stolen.

Swalls says nothing was taken from her truck, but her center console and glove compartment were left open.

“They did break the window and pulled it out and had it laying there. I just … I don’t know,” Swalls said.

Investigators say what happened follows a pattern they’re seeing across many of the cases. Nearly all of the targets were pickup trucks.

“It would appear that it doesn’t matter if they’re locked, or unlocked. They’re gaining entry and going through glove boxes, and center consoles, real quick, and then moving on,” Damian Katt, investigations commander at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Katt says Greenwood and Bargersville police have also reported similar break-ins, and now the agencies are sharing information to determine the connections between the crimes.

Detectives are asking homeowners to review surveillance footage from between 12:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning for suspicious activity.

“The most important thing is for people to not leave valuables in their vehicles. Unfortunately, that’s not the age we live in now,” Katt said.

When News 8 talked to Swalls, she was on her way to get her window fixed, but she says she hopes people can use more caution.

“Beware because this was very scary I think. At the time you have so many emotions going on but it’s very scary,” Swalls said.

Investigators ask anyone with any information to contact them.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man has been sentenced to 88 years in prison for the deadly mass shooting at a Broad Ripple bar in 2024, that killed one and wounded five others.

Nicholas Fulk, 25, was found guilty of Murder, Aggravated Battery and four counts of Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon after a three-day trial in March.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced Monday that Fulk will serve 88 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.

“The strength shown by Timothy Brown Jr.’s family throughout this case has been remarkable,” Prosecutor Mears said. “Even while reliving one of the worst moments of their lives, they spoke about Timothy with love, dignity, and grace. Timothy was more than a victim in this case, he was a devoted father, a brother, a son, a mentor, and a person who made his community better. Indianapolis needs more people like Timothy, and today’s sentence ensures accountability for the life that was taken far too soon.”

Fulk’s charges stem from a deadly shooting inside Landsharks bar on Broad Ripple Avenue on March 16, 2024.

Five victims were found inside the bar with gunshot wounds. A sixth person was self-transported to the hospital. Timothy Brown Jr., 36, later died from his injuries.

Bar surveillance video showed an argument between two women just before the shooting. As the group moved toward the exit, Fulk grabbed a gun from one of the women and opened fire. None of the surviving victims were involved in the argument.

Investigators used bar cameras and Flock camera technology to track Fulk’s vehicle to his south side home, where he was arrested. The coat and hat he wore during the shooting, along with a firearm found under the driver’s seat, were recovered from his vehicle.

The Broad Ripple Village Association had previously added safety measures to the district following a string of violence, including earlier bar closing times, added cameras, lighting and early lot closures.

IMPD North District Commander Matthew Thomas said at the time: “It’s acts like this, where you have one person making a very poor decision, that impacts this close-knit community.”

VALPARAISO, Ind. (WISH) — A Valparaiso mother and father are fighting to get their kids back after they say the Indiana Department of Child Services wrongfully accused them of abusing their baby.

Amanda Denney, an emergency room nurse, and her husband, Louis Stanford, say Indiana’s child welfare system is “unchecked power.”

They contacted I-Team 8 for help.

‘It was terrifying:’ Couple says Child Services took children amid abuse allegations

The Stanfords say their daughter Clara Stanford appeared happy and healthy at 4 weeks old.

On Nov. 6, her mother, Amanda, saw something about Clara that concerned her.

“I looked in the inner corner of her eye, and I just noticed a red mark, and I’m like, what is that?” Amanda asked.

The next day, Clara’s other eye also had bleeding, according to Amanda.

Amanda took Clara to the pediatrician who referred them to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

As a nurse, Amanda knew to expect a lot of questions and tests at the hospital.

“They did the CT, did the X-ray, which was, in fact, a skeletal survey, which, from my research, automatically triggers a consultation to a child abuse pediatrician,” Amanda said. “I don’t think we were concerned at all because there was nothing was going to show up on a scan or an X-ray to substantiate our child was abused.”

Clara’s parents say the child abuse pediatrician asked them a lot of questions including about Clara’s birth and family history.

“She said, you know an infant cannot injure themselves like this, something had to have happened,” Amanda said.

Amanda said she explained to the doctor that Clara had been straining to make a bowel movement in the days before.

“She was bearing down, like purple face, arms over her head, trying to have a bowel movement, and we’re like, could that have caused it?” Amanda asked.

Doctors contacted the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) and a Child Services caseworker came to the hospital.

“She’s like I can detain your kids,” said Amanda. “I freaked out. It was terrifying, absolutely and utterly terrifying.”

DCS removed Clara and her older sister from the Stanfords through an emergency detention, where the agency can remove a child without a court order.

“I bargained, yelled and screamed and cried on the floor for like a good two and a half, three hours because I was in just such shock and disbelief that this was even happening to us,” Amanda said.

Indiana DCS paperwork provided to I-Team 8 by the Stanfords shows DCS noted, “Parents cannot explain cause of injury to infant who is not mobile enough to cause injury on their own,” and “believe to be trauma caused by shaking, hitting, blunt force, or other unknown causes.”

I-Team 8 asked, “What do you say to people that say, you know, is it possible that one of you somehow hurt your baby? What’s your response?”

Amanda said, “Nope, not at all.”

The Stanfords had a New York doctor, D. Phyllis Weiner, review Clara’s records.

Weiner evaluates alleged child abuse cases and found the cause of Clara’s eye issues was vitamin K Deficiency bleeding, as well as forceful vomiting and straining.

“This is not a case of Child Physical Abuse,” Weiner said in her report.

Louis said, “For me, it was relief that somebody took the time and reviewed the notes and, like, looked at everything that was happening and said, yes, there is a medical explanation for this.”

Across the country, child abuse pediatricians contract with state child welfare agencies to help determine whether injuries were the result of abuse or neglect.

Colorado professor, a child abuse pediatrician, explains role

I-Team 8 spoke with a child abuse pediatrician who is not affiliated with Indiana or the Stanfords’ case.

Dr. Antonia Chiesa is a professor of pediatrics at the Colorado School of Medicine, with a specialty in child abuse pediatrics.

Chiesa can’t comment on individual cases, but she said child abuse pediatricians are trained to look for conditions that mimic abuse.

“If a child comes in with bruising, we don’t automatically jump to the conclusion that the child’s been abused,” Chiesa said. “We take a good history. We do an exam. We speak to the parent or the child if they’re verbal, and we think about other conditions that could be causing this.”

Chiesa says child abuse pediatricians collaborate with other medical colleagues.

“When it’s gray and ambiguous, and a diagnosis can’t be determined, we need to say that,” Chiesa said.

When there is a diagnosis of abuse, medical providers must legally report those concerns, Chiesa said.

“We are not there to figure out who did what,” Chiesa said. “We are just there to say, with the best understanding of the medical literature in our practice, this injury is diagnostic or makes sense for physical abuse.”

Child abuse pediatrics was approved as a new specialty by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2006, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics website.

“We’re a relatively new medical specialty,” Chiesa said . “We are trained on all forms of child maltreatment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and sexual assault.”

Indiana Department of Child Services responds

Every year, dozens of Indiana children die from abuse and neglect.

The Indiana Department of Child Services received 213,938 reports of suspected abuse and neglect in 2025, records show.

I-Team 8 reached out to DCS and they can’t legally comment on individual cases.

The agency told us broadly, “Statute and case law guides how DCS determines when to remove a child from the care of a parent.”

The DCS also says in general, they must receive authorization from a juvenile court to “keep the child in custody if the child was removed under exigent circumstances.”

I-Team 8 reached out to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago for comment, and we are still waiting to hear back.

‘Unchecked power:’ Stanfords push for change

The Stanfords say they have not been contacted by police regarding their suspected abuse case.

DCS filed a CHINS petition, or Child in Need of Services, against them.

The DCS case is still pending, and court hearings are scheduled for later this year.

Meanwhile, Clara and her sister are staying with their grandmother while the Stanfords get supervised visits.

“We are also completely compliant with all the services they’re forcing on us,” Amanda said. “I guess the taxpayers can pay for our therapy once a week and pay for visit supervisors to sit in our house and watch us be a family.”

They say the child welfare system needs an overhaul and that the opinions of child abuse pediatricians carry too much weight in the child welfare system.

“It goes back to unchecked power,” Amanda said.

The Stanfords’ story is spreading on social media, including the hashtag #BringHomeTheStanfords.

“We’re not alone,” Amanda said. “There’s power in numbers. This has to stop. You shouldn’t be scared to get your children help.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police cracked down on illegal spinning over the weekend on the city’s west side.

Police say spinning is not only illegal but also dangerous. Police say they towed three vehicles, made three arrests, and confiscated an illegal firear. It happened at a parking lot on West 38th Street near Moller Road.

Officer Drew Brown of IMPD said, “Our roadways are where we get to and from our businesses, and we want to make sure anyone getting on those roadways, whether drivers or pedestrians, is safe doing so.”

Chris Gonzales has worked in the Circle Tires shop for years. It’s located near the parking lot where the arrest was made. He says he’s seen his fair share of illegal driving on West 38th Street.

He says illegal driving happens on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights in large parking lots along West 38th Street. “Those who are speeding get scared. They drive into the medians. In this median right here, people always run into it.”

Police say doing doughnuts, drifting, burnouts, or takeover-style spinning on public roads or parking lots can cause injuries or death. Brown said, “What the big takeaway is this driving behavior is reckless, criminal, and it could affect your neighbors in this community.”

IMPD says it is cracking down on illegal spinning and urged anyone who witnesses reckless driving to reach out.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that the third phase of U.S. 31 road work at I-465 and northward in Carmel will begin this week, leading to monthslong restrictions and closings.

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Road work to improve U.S. 31 and its interchanges from 96th to 116th streets will enter the third of four phases, leading to monthslong road restrictions and closings starting this week, the Indiana Department of Transportation says.

The Carmel road work, initially estimated at $63 million, was designed to modify the interchange at I-465 and U.S. 31/Meridian Street; upgrade seven overpass deck overlays; and to widen parts of U.S. 31 due to added congestion and more frequent crashes.

In the third phase through the fall, crews will widen the elevated eastbound and westbound I-465 ramps to northbound U.S. 31.

Starting on or after Wednesday, southbound Meridian Street will close between 106th Street and 96th Street through late fall. The 106th Street exit ramp to southbound Meridian Street will also close during this period. However, the 106th Street exit ramp to I-465 will remain open.

On or after Saturday, a temporary traffic shift will be implemented on I-465 ramps to northbound U.S. 31, continuing through late fall. The northbound U.S. 31/Meridian Street ramp to 106th Street and the 106th Street ramp to northbound U.S. 31 will close.

Motorists can still access northbound U.S. 31 from I-465 through a temporary traffic shift. This shift will use the existing southbound lanes on U.S. 31/Meridian Street before directing traffic back to the existing northbound lanes just south of 106th Street.

Drivers on southbound Meridian Street will need to exit at 106th Street and travel west to Illinois Street and Spring Mill Road to resume their southbound journeys.

Access to I-465 from both northbound and southbound Meridian Street will remain open during these changes.

A news release issued Friday noted that Phase 3 start times were weather dependent and subject to change.

Travis E. Hurd, a registered sex offender, faces new charges after sending inappropriate social media messages to a 17-year-old girl in Jasper County, Indiana.

RENSSELAER, Ind. (WISH) — A 45-year-old sex offender from Lafayette faces new criminal charges after an investigation into inappropriate social media messages sent to a 17-year-old girl in Jasper County, the sheriff’s office said Monday.

A social media post from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said the charges against Travis E. Hurd stem from messages sent on or around Dec. 20, which included requests for explicit images from the girl. The charges include low-level felony counts of child exploitation, dissemination of matter harmful to minors, and obstruction of justice.

Hurd is a registered sex offender with prior unrelated convictions for sex crimes involving minors, the post said. He admitted to detectives that he sent the messages to the girl during an interview with investigators on Monday.

The post on Facebook said, “The messages included request for explicit images, sent her images of lingerie and adult toys. Hurd went on further in an attempt to get the victim to photograph herself wearing adult clothing and sell them on the internet.”

Hurd also told the girl to delete their conversations and not disclose them to anyone.

The girl confirmed that the messages and images she received were unwanted.

Hurd’s initial hearing on the latest charges was on Monday morning in Jasper Superior Court. Hurd remained an inmate in the Tippecanoe County jail on Monday night, according to the app for that county’s sheriff. The app said he was booked into the Tippecanoe County jail on April 6 on a low-level felony count of unlawful possession of a syringe.

The information from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office post did not say how its investigators learned of the messages.

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — A Jackson County grand jury last week indicted a 50-year-old Brownstown man of reckless homicide in the death of an infant attacked by a dog in 2025, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

The 2-month-old girl’s mother also faces a criminal charge in a Jackson County court.

Online court records on Monday evening did not yet show a case filed against Todd A. Banks. A news release from the sheriff’s office said Banks was indicted on a low-level felony county of reckless homicide. He remained in jail on Monday evening.

The release and previous information from the sheriff’s office said the pit bull dog’s attack happened April 3, 2025, in the 1800 block of South County Road 100 East, which is about a 4-minute drive southeast of downtown Brownstown. No details on how the dog attack happened were provided in the latest release.

County deputies and Brownstown Police Department officers arrested Banks on Sunday.

Online records show the child’s mother, Paitlyn Grove, 25, of Crothersville, faces a count of reckless homicide, filed Friday in Jackson Circuit Court. No court hearing has been scheduled in her case. Other online records did not list Grove as an inmate in the county jail as of 5:30 p.m. Monday. It was not clear from court records filed by Monday that an arrest warrant had been issued for Grove.

The previously released information said the girl was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where she died before she could be flown by helicopter to another hospital.

Monday’s release from the sheriff’s office said, “Due to ongoing court proceedings, no additional information regarding the case will be released at this time.”

News 8 has reached out for court documents in the cases.

Jackson County, with 47,300 residents, is about an 80-minute drive south of downtown Indianapolis.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said the Iran ceasefire is on “life support” after rejecting Tehran’s latest proposal, which officials said included some nuclear concessions. Trump also proposed suspending the federal gas tax to help with higher fuel prices caused by the war.

The stalled diplomacy and recent exchanges of fire could tip the Middle East back into open warfare and prolong the worldwide energy crisis sparked by the conflict. Iran still has a chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas shipments, and America is blockading Iranian ports.

Asked at the White House if the ceasefire was still in effect, Trump said it’s on “life support.”

“I would call it the weakest right now after reading that piece of garbage they sent us,” Trump added. “I didn’t even finish reading it.”

Trump also said he supported a suspension of the federal tax on gasoline — just over 18 cents per gallon and 24 cents for diesel. Congress, which is controlled by Republicans, would have to approve. The tax brings in more than $23 billion each year.

His pledge came after fuel prices surged past $4.50 a gallon last week. Trump predicted that the price of oil and gas would drop “like a rock” as soon as hostilities are over.

The two sides remain far apart

Trump has demanded a major rollback of Iran’s nuclear activities, while Iran is pushing for a more limited agreement that would reopen the strait and lift the blockade ahead of further negotiations.

On Monday, Trump claimed that Iran had said it would allow the U.S. to come in and help extract its highly enriched uranium but went back on that in its latest ceasefire proposal. “They changed their mind because they didn’t put it in the paper,” he said.

Iran has not publicly agreed to give up its uranium, saying it has a right to enrich and that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

Two regional officials told The Associated Press that Iran has offered to dilute part of its highly enriched uranium and transport the rest to a third country. Russia has previously offered to take it. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomacy.

Trump is expected to use a trip this week to China to urge President Xi Jinping to pressure Iran. Beijing is the biggest buyer of Iran’s sanctioned crude oil, giving it leverage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched the war with Trump on Feb. 28, has also demanded that all of Iran’s highly enriched uranium be removed from the country.

He told CBS’ “60 Minutes” in an interview that aired Sunday that if that can’t be accomplished with negotiations, Israel and the U.S. agree “we can reengage them militarily.”

Iran’s proposal included far-reaching demands

Iran’s proposal asked that the U.S. recognize its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, formalizing its control over the international waterway. Iran has effectively closed the strait since the start of the war, allowing only a small number of ships to pass and charging tolls.

But experts say such an arrangement would likely violate international law that provides for freedom of navigation. That proposal is also likely to be widely rejected by the international community. The strait was open to international traffic before the war.

Iran is also demanding war reparations from the U.S., the lifting of international sanctions, the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad and an end to the war between Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah, according to Iranian state TV.

Israel and Hezbollah have continued to exchange blows, mainly in southern Lebanon, since a nominal ceasefire took hold last month.

“We did not demand any concessions — the only thing we demanded was Iran’s legitimate rights,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Monday. “The American side still insists on its one-sided views and unreasonable demands.”

Pakistan still trying to negotiate a deal

Two regional diplomats familiar with the ongoing talks said that Pakistan was continuing its efforts to broker a compromise.

One of the diplomats said Pakistan was trying to arrange a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war and paving the way for a broader dialogue on issues where the two sides remain divided.

Pakistan had hoped to help finalize the memorandum last week, but the effort did not materialize, and mediators are still working on various proposals, the diplomat said.

The diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the behind-the-scenes diplomacy, added that Islamabad is receiving support from other regional countries in its peace efforts.

Iran keeps up its executions

Meanwhile, Iran executed another man it accused of spying for both the CIA and Israel’s Mossad intelligence service. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said Erfan Shakourzadeh had worked on satellite communications and relayed classified information to those intelligence services.

Iran has carried out a string of executions since nationwide protests swept the country in January. Activist groups have long accused Iran of carrying out closed-door trials during which defendants are unable to fully defend themselves. Iran’s judiciary chief has repeatedly said that Tehran would increase the speed with which it carried out hangings to fight back against its enemies at home and abroad.
