INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A motorcyclist died in a Monday night crash with a car on South East Street on the south side, police say.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was sent just before 8:50 p.m. Monday to the crash in the 3300 block of South East Street. That’s an area with restaurants and other businesses just south of the intersection with Madison Avenue.

The car driver will be tested for alcohol use, a common practice in fatal crashes, but police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash. The car driver received minor injuries, police said.

Names of those in the crash were not immediately available. What may have led to the crash also was not immediately known.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Shaquille O’Neal, also known as DJ Diesel, is scheduled to perform at The Neon Cactus in West Lafayette on Saturday, September 26, The Neon Cactus announced on its Facebook page. The performance is on the same day Purdue plays Notre Dame at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m. It is a 21+ event.

Kickoff for the Purdue-Notre Dame game has not been announced yet.

O’Neal is in the Basketball Hall of Fame and won 4 NBA Championships in his career. He was the MVP in the 1999-2000 season and was a 15-time All-Star.

O’Neal performs as a DJ under the name DJ Diesel and has performed at music festivals such as Lollapalooza.

WASHINGTON (WISH) — Caitlin Clark hit a game-winning 31-foot three-point shot with 1.4 seconds remaining as the Fever beat the Mystics, 78-76.

The Fever were up by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but the Mystics came all the way back to take the lead with 51 seconds remaining.

Kelsey Mitchell made a fastbreak layup off an assist from Clark with 11 seconds left and the Fever retook the lead. However, Mystics guard Sonia Citron knocked down two free throws after being fouled with four seconds left to put them up one point. Then, it was Clark’s game-winning three.

“We always think about ways we want to get better and we certainly crumbled a little bit and we would’ve liked to definitely have played the third a little bit better and not let them be back in the game, but this is a hard league to play in,” Clark said. “You take a win in whatever way you can get it. And when we go down the line here, nobody’s going to look back and be like, ‘Oh, well, the Fever probably should’ve lost this game but made a buzzer beater.’ No, it’s a W. It’s a win for us.”

The win moves the Fever to 2-1 in Commissioner’s Cup games.

Clark led the team with 19 points. Kelsey Mitchell (15 points) and Aliyah Boston (14 points) also scored in double figures.

Next up for the Fever is a home matchup against the Chicago Sky. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday.

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — A 22-year-old Cumberland man was arrested Monday afternoon in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 6-year-old boy, police say.

Jari Spencer died at a hospital after being hit around 2:35 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of East Washington Street and German Church Road in the town that straddles the border of Hancock and Marion counties.

Cumberland Police Department Capt. Mark Waggoner said Tyler Johnson, 22, was arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine what charges to file, if any.

Waggoner said the crash was believed to be accidental. “We know the Spencer family is hurting and now we have another family that is hurting with another young person going to jail for the responsibility of this.”

Waggoner said investigators used license-plate readers and video from the area of the crash, which was near the police station, to find the 2024 Chevrolet Aveo involved in the crash. The car had been sold two weeks earlier, and the previous owner helped investigators find the current owner.

Police found Johnson driving the car Monday on Cumberland Road near 21st Street prior to his arrest.

Waggoner said, “I can’t say why people do what they do. I think, again, this is a 22-year-old. He’s scared. I think he realizes the gravity of the situation, maybe not fully yet, but it’s imperative if he had stopped, this would have been a very different situation.”

Police say Spencer, who had been diagnosed with autism, had walked away from home unnoticed before the car hit him. The Spencer family told police that Jari loved walking to Dollar Tree store and a nearby park. They believe he was walking that way.

Nigel Foreman frequents the same park. He is heartbroken by the incident, especially because he says he is a father with a child who is autistic. “You have to be a lot more attentive than you would with any other child. You just have to be very patient, very kind. And that’s why it’s sad, especially if he was nonverbal. That’s really what makes it even more sad. I know it’s probably really hard on the family.”

Safe Streets Indy says 13 pedestrian fatalities have happened this year on Washington Street, up from 11 fatalities in 2025. Within a mile radius of the hit-and-run, four fatalities and 36 bike and pedestrian accidents have been recorded.

Eric Holt with Safe Streets Indy said the city government needs to do more to make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

“And so what ends up happening in a street like Washington Street is you have a lot of lanes, high-speed traffic. It’s a long distance for pedestrians to have to cross, so it becomes a ticking time bomb.”

Cumberland is a town of 8,000 residents.

More scattered rain & storms are likely. Locally heavy rain remains possible and some storms could end up being gusty at some point. Highs should climb back into the mid 80s.  Dew point values in the lower 70s will keep things sultry.

While some storms may pop up, the day as a whole doesn’t appear as it will be as wet as other days this week. Highs will be near 90 with heat indices around 100.

Highs near 90 with heat indices around 100 are on the table once again.  Some scattered storms could develop during the heating of the day but there is a greater chance of more widespread activity during the evening and overnight hours into early Friday morning.  A batch of strong to severe storms with damaging wind gusts could develop along a cold front.

A noticeable drop in humidity should occur during the day Friday and it won’t be AS humid during the coming weekend.  Temperatures drop a bit too, mainly into the mid to low 80s with overnight lows falling back into the 60s.  The chance for a little more rain & thunder returns Sunday into early next week.  

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Federal Trade Commission issued a warning Monday about fake CAPTCHA scams.

You’ve seen the box on websites asking you to click on pictures of traffic lights or crosswalks to verify you’re not a robot.

It’s called CAPTCHA.

The FTC says here is how the scam works:

• You get an unexpected CAPTCHA request while browsing a website.
• The screen looks a lot like a regular CAPTCHA, asking you to verify you’re human. But the message says to type a series of commands — something like “Windows + R,” then “Ctrl + V,” and then “Enter”.
• The screen might say “security verification,” but you’re actually following the steps to paste and run hidden malware on your device.
• Once it’s there, scammers can quickly steal your email account login data, mobile banking credentials, or any other information they can get access to.

According to the FTC, real CAPTCHAs won’t ask you to run commands on your phone or computer.

If you notice something downloading to your device after responding to a CAPTCHA, act quickly to remove the malware and protect yourself:

• Disconnect from the internet. This stops scammers from accessing your online shopping or banking accounts.
• Run a security scan to remove the malware. Keep your software and apps up to date to catch viruses.
• Change your passwords and enable two-factor authentication (using a different device) in case the malware already gave a hacker access to your accounts.

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, you can tell it’s a scam if they ask you to press a specific sequence of keys (like the Windows Key+ R, then Ctrl + V) to “fix” the issue.

By following those steps you’re actually telling your computer to:

• Open a hidden command box.
• Paste in a “script” or a set of invisible instructions.
• Run that script, which downloads a virus onto your computer.

“It gives you very explicit directions on what keys to push in what order, but when you do that, you’re actually downloading some malware on to your machine and it’s now going to feed all the information from your machine to the bad guys,” James Lee, president of the Identity Theft Resource Center told I-Team 8.

Lee told I-Team 8 they’re seeing the scam pop up on both legitimate websites as well as fake websites.

If you fall for it, act immediately.

“First thing is disconnect your computer from the internet,” said Lee. “So if you’re on WiFi turn off the WiFi, if you’ve got a wire connected to your computer unplug the wire.”

Also, run anti-virus software on your device and change your passwords using a different device than the one that was compromised.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The general counsel for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce on Monday said employers should follow best practices to avoid running afoul of Indiana’s new immigration law.

Beginning July 1, employers can no longer hire, recruit, or continue to employ someone who is not authorized to work in the United States. The attorney general can investigate suspected violations. A first offense will bring a warning. Subsequent offenses will be referred to the courts, which will have the option to suspend business licenses for anywhere from five business days to six months, depending on how many violations there are. In extreme cases, the courts are authorized to revoke business licenses permanently.

Adam Berry, vice president for public policy and general counsel at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber is fielding questions from employers about how to comply with the law before it takes effect. He said the most common sources of questions are labor-intensive industries such as agriculture or hospitality. Berry said the law only applies to hiring practices on or after July 1. It does not go after employers for decisions they made prior to then.

“There is no lookback. So they have until July 1 to get their house in order, and again, it’s not a report card on the past but it’s the day on which compliance matters going forward,” he said.

Berry said the law leaves it up to the courts whether and to what extent they impose penalties. He said enforcement will begin with the attorney general issuing a civil investigation demand, or CID, to a business suspected of violations. That does not automatically mean the employer is facing sanctions.

“It’s the attorney general’s way of discovering more information about the employer, it’s hiring practices, et cetera,” he said. “Certainly, employers who are doing the right thing, or believe they are doing the right thing, they can definitely be issued a CID. Employers should know that they have rights if they receive a civil investigation demand. So in that instance, they should certainly contact an attorney sooner rather than later.”

Berry said the attorney general’s office will issue guidance for employers later this month. He said employers should follow the guidance closely and make sure their paperwork is organized and ready for inspection.

During a news conference last week, Attorney General Todd Rokita said the new law does not allow him to open criminal probes into businesses. He said any penalties under the law are strictly civil. But he said he will refer cases to county prosecutors for further investigation if, in the course of any reviews, he discovers evidence of possible criminal wrongdoing.

(MIRROR INDY) — The hearing examiner for the Metropolitan Development Commission will consider a proposal on an eastside data center at 1 p.m. June 11 

Georgia-based developer DC Blox hopes to build a $2 billion data center campus near South Kitley Avenue and the Pennsy Trail. Once completed, the campus would consist of three buildings. Representatives from DC Blox said the facilities could use up to 78 megawatts of electricity and include 56 backup generators.

DC Blox is seeking a use variance, not a rezoning of the property. A use variance is a request to use a property for something not currently allowed in its zoning classification, which all data centers currently have to go through in Indianapolis. If the hearing examiner approves the request, the petition will move to the full Metropolitan Development Commission for a vote.

The hearing will take place in the public assembly room of the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St. 

Representatives for DC Blox will present information about the proposal. Community members can also share comments. At the meeting, the hearing examiner will make a recommendation to approve or deny the petition. The petition then moves to the full eight person MDC for a vote.

The MDC will have final approval of the project. Written comments about the proposal can be emailed to planneroncall@indy.gov before the hearing.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — Brownsburg senior wide receiver Branden Sharpe is one of the most dynamic players in the state, and he’s keeping his talents right here with a commitment to the Indiana Hoosiers.

“Being a hometown kid, like Indiana, that’s all you hear growing up. It meant the world to me. When they first offered me, I was like, ‘Oh man.’ I was stoked. I called my dad and was like let’s go! I was excited,” Sharpe said. “16-0 natty champs, you can’t get better than that, so that really helped me make my decision.”

Sharpe got to hold that national championship trophy during his official visit to Bloomington last week.

“Just being able to put that jersey on to see what it would be like in a year, it felt really cool,” Sharpe said. “Obviously, the pictures turned out nice, and just wearing the Hoosier logo on my jersey and my number on it, it was awesome.”

To see him in that uniform, it just all came full circle,” Sharpe’s dad Dale said. “It’s like, ‘Alright, this is it. We’re ready to go now.'”

Before Sharpe officially joins the Hoosiers next spring, his No. 1 goal is to hang another state championship banner up here at Brownsburg. It would be a three-peat for the Bulldogs. Either way, Sharpe is taking all the lessons he’s learned from head coach John Hart down to Bloomington.

“Always work hard. Don’t ever stay complacent because if you don’t and if you’re not physical, there’s going to be somebody out there’s going to be trying to bust your butt,” Sharpe said. “So, (Coach Hart) just always taught me to work hard and be physical and great things will happen.”

Sharpe’s excited to learn from another championship coach — Curt Cignetti. Sharpe had the chance to meet Cignetti during his visit to Bloomington.

“I thought he was pretty funny. I mean, funnier than I would’ve guessed. He actually does have a personality, contrary to popular belief,” Sharpe said. “He’s a great guy. I think he’ll be able to build me off the field just as much as on the field.”

“He doesn’t shy away from hard coaching and discipline. His work ethic is what sets him a part. I always tell him that,” dad Dale said of his son. “I see how the work that the (Indiana) coaches put in… they expect if not perfection, as close to perfection as possible, and so, I see him fitting very well with that coaching staff.”

“I think under the staff I can become the best player that I possibly can and just being able to see where that can take me,” Sharpe said.

Maybe even a national championship of his own.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — It was a busy day at the The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, as Indiana Sports Corp hosted its annual charity golf tournament.

The money the tournament raises goes towards benefitting under-served youth in central Indiana, with proceeds going to grant funding, clinics, sports equipment purchases, and more.

“For us, this is really helping all of our youth supporting missions,” Indiana Sports Corp president Patrick Talty said. “We have four pillars that we focus on. Our literacy program, our learn to swim program, access to sport and of course building our community. Those things are important to us. We try to have all of our impact across our events.

“We have people who have been here since the beginning,” Talty added. “We have some folks that have played in every single one of these, all 38 and we are really excited about that and we see people coming back year after year because they see the importance of the mission.”

This is the 38th year of the Indiana Sports Corp charity golf outing.

MENLO PARK, Calif. (WISH) — The Boone County Economic Development Corp., a nonprofit business league based in Lebanon, Indiana, is a partner in a Meta academy designed to train people for long-term careers in skilled trades, Meta announced in a Monday afternoon news release.

The county’s economic development nonprofit operates in partnership with local governments, elected officials, and private stakeholders.

The America’s Workforce Academy will start with an initial $115 million investment, resulting in what Meta called guaranteed jobs for all graduates, the release said.

The Meta academy, with sites planned in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana and Texas, will be cost-free. Graduates will earn both the industry-recognized National Center for Construction Education and Research credential and an America’s Workforce Certificate, the release said.

In Boone County, Meta Platforms is developing a $10 billion, 1,500-acre data center campus in Lebanon, within the Limitless Exploration/Advanced Pace (LEAP) Research and Innovation District, as News 8 has previously reported. The Meta project, with construction underway, will include up to 15 buildings to support Meta’s artificial intelligence products and workloads. The state government has said the site will employee more than 4,000 construction workers, and create 300 high-wage jobs. Plans call for the campus to open in late 2027 or early 2028.

By year’s end, Meta also plans to open an $800 million, 700,000-square-foot facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The southern Indiana facility was designed to support its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It’s expected to employ 100 people when operations begin.

Other partners in the project include the National Urban League, the Associated Builders and Contractors, commercial property investor CBRE, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the workforce development nonprofit STRIVE, the Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce in Louisiana, Workforce Solutions Borderplex in Texas, and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce in Ohio.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Lawrence North running back Izayveon Moore flipped his commitment from Miami (OH) to Purdue, he announced on X (formerly Twitter).

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this process… I’m excited for this next chapter and the opportunities ahead,” Moore wrote in the post. “Boiler Up!”

Moore has rushed for at least 1,000 yards in all three of his seasons with the Wildcats. He had his best statistical season in his junior year in 2025, rushing for 1,587 yards and 30 touchdowns. He had over 100 yards in all nine games he played in.

Moore helped lead Lawrence North to an undefeated regular season and a sectional title in 2024.

Moore is listed as a three-star recruit by 247Sports.

Moore and Lawrence North start their season against Brownsburg, who has won the last two 6A state championships. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on August 21.

INDIANAPOLIS (WSIH) — WISH-TV medical expert Dr. Janel Gordon on Monday offered advice on protecting skin from sunburns, rashes, and other common summer issues.

Gordon’s guidance comes as warmer weather in central Indiana encourages more outdoor activities, leading to increased sun exposure and a higher risk of skin problems.

Her recommendations focused on timing outdoor activities and selecting appropriate sunscreens.

Gordon also advised viewers on optimal outdoor times to minimize sun exposure. She said the hottest hours for sun exposure typically happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. “If you are going to be outside, I do recommend that you get out there prior to 10 a.m., and then if you do have any social activities, they usually save those for later in the evening.”

She added that sunburns can happen “within minutes” depending on heat, the ozone layer, and the amount of exposed skin.

When selecting sunscreen, Gordon recommended choosing products with at least SPF 30 or higher. She said all skin colors benefit from sun protection throughout the year, especially on hot, sunny days. “It doesn’t matter what color of your skin, even individuals whose skin color is similar to mine, we do benefit from having protection from sunscreen throughout the year and especially on hotter, sunny days.”

Gordon specifically recommended looking for tinted mineral sunscreens for enhanced protection, particularly for people with certain skin conditions. “Be sure that you look into more tinted mineral sunscreens. We do know that those are going to give us better protection, especially for individuals who suffer from some skin conditions, such as acne. You are going to be at increased risk for what we call hyperpigmentation, or even individuals who have rosacea. It’s very important that you consider a mineral sunscreen these days and even a tinted.”

She also noted that extended sun exposure can increase the risk of photoaging and worsen hyperpigmentation for those with acne.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The fourth annual Summer Market and Food Drive, organized by Spooner Markets, will take place Sunday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville.

The event will collect nonperishable food donations for the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank while featuring more than 85 local vendors. The food bank supports more than 30 community food pantries across Hamilton County.

The market is designed to help address summer hunger while highlighting small, local businesses.

“We bring together artisans, handmade woodworkers and mini boutiques — just a variety of products,” said Sherry Spooner, market director for Spooner Markets. “We look for quality vendors. They’re very passionate about what they make and do.”

Vendors will include family-owned food trucks, coffee and drink trailers and mobile boutique trailers. Offerings will range from baked goods and coffee to crochet items, jewelry, candles, wall decor and magnets. Spooner said most items are handmade.

Attendees can also shop for seasonal gifts, including Father’s Day items, and enjoy food, seating areas and live music. Summer giveaways will also be offered.

Those who donate food items will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Lowe’s gift card.

“Our very first market started out with about 40 vendors,” Spooner said. “We’ve grown to the whole building and outside vendors, mobile boutique trailers.”

The food drive will accept nonperishable items such as mac and cheese, applesauce, granola bars, canned vegetables, soup and boxed goods.
