March for peace planned for Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Tomorrow morning, some who live on the city’s east side plan to march for peace in an area hit hard by violence.

Earlier tonight, those who live in the 46218 zipcode gathered to hear from the nephew of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Professor Derek King spoke to the crowd inside the Hovey Street Church of Christ about strategies for cutting crime and the importance of everyone getting involved to take back their streets.

“We just want to make a difference tomorrow and they’ll know us better by how we walk together than how we talk,” said King.

Reverend Denell Howard of the Hovey Street Church of Christ called for the community to get involved.

“We need to show that you can have as many police as you want, but if the community doesn’t decide enough is enough, then you’ll still just have more killing,” Howard said.

Tomorrow’s march will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Martindale Brightwood library.
