Study: Newer birth control may increase blood clot risk

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The type of birth control women use could affect their risk of blot clots.

A new study published in the journal BMJ indicates newer types of birth control pills could increase a woman’s risk of developing blood clots.

The study found that pills containing one of the newer types of progestogen hormone are associated with a 1.5 to to 1.8 times higher blood clot risk than the older version of the pill. Some of the specific brands included in the study were Yaz, Yasmin and Desogen.

Still, researchers say birth control pills are generally safe and women should not stop taking them because of the study.
