IMPD officer seriously injured in overnight wreck

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An IMPD officer is in serious condition after a wreck on the northwest side of Indianapolis. The crash happened around midnight Thursday at Kessler Boulevard and Grandview Drive, just east of Michigan Road.

Investigators said the officer was headed west on Kessler and had a flashing yellow light, and the other driver was going north on Grandview and had a flashing red light. IMPD said the female driver ran the red light and t-boned the squad car. The squad car was seriously damaged and pushed into a ditch. Most of the damage was to the driver’s side door.

The officer called in the wreck himself, and was awake and talking when medics got there. Crews took him to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

“He was clearly in, from the audio when he called in the crash himself, he was clearly at that point disoriented. But he was coherent enough to advise that he was on Kessler. He knew he was east of Michigan road and had been involved in a serious accident,” said IMPD Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham.

Cunningham said the other driver did not have serious injuries. Crews still took her to the hospital to get a blood draw, as is protocol in any serious accident. They say she is cooperating fully. Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck. The officer will have a blood draw as well, also as standard procedure. Those results will be available in a few days.

Cunningham said investigators will handle this crash like any other, but the department will also review the crash internally.

“There will be a packet filled out, and we have an internal accident crash review board that will go over all the circumstances. They will look through the officer’s history, they will determine who was at fault in this particular case. We do have people from our driver training unit that will review all the circumstances of this crash,” said Cunningham.

According to an IMPD spokeswoman, the officer remained in the hospital mid-Thursday morning and was said to be stable.
